From Rev. Posa

Rev Eric Posa

In the 21st century, one of the best ways I've been able to keep up with some of the latest insights into Unitarian Universalism has been to read blogs. Online journals, or weblogs ("blogs" for short) can focus on anything from political screeds, to deep philosophical & spiritual reflections, to pictures of cats. Many UUs over the last decade have shared fresh perspectives into the past, present, and future of our liberal religious tradition and its institutions. Frankly, they're not always positive; reading UU bloggers requires a certain tolerance, both for constructive critique and for angry rants.

Yet many, even some with a critical edge, still sound a hopeful note. Rev. Tony Lorenzen, author of the blog Sunflower Chalice, offered some helpful thoughts in a recent post to his blog, entitled "Mission and Church Growth." Turns out he's not a big fan of the widespread UU focus on church growth, and he pulls no punches. In his words:

The world doesn't need more of us.... Rather than keeping "score" or measuring our success with how many members we have and how much money is in the budget, we should keep score by looking at how much spiritual growth is happening and how much service we are rendering to our community.

This would be a major shift in thinking for many churches, including ours. But I have to agree with Rev. Lorenzen. As I said at a recent UUCG visioning workshop, I think one of the best things we can do as a church is to STOP trying to grow. Numerical growth in membership, attendance, budget, etc. is not a bad outcome for any church. But taking direct steps to make it happen are to put the cart before the horse.

Instead of encouraging numerical growth as such, I argue for simply doing what we can to become a better church, regardless of whether or not it's a bigger one. Rev. Lorenzen expands this point by advocating for "the congregational development of qualities needed to fulfill its essential purpose or mission" (organic growth), "growth in depth of spiritual commitment and practice and wisdom" (maturational growth), and growing "how the congregation lives out its faith in the world serving the needs of the community" (incarnational growth). A church that does this well, could indeed get more members (or not), but it will be healthier, deeper, and more vibrant, which in the final analysis is more important.

A few days later, Rev. David Owen-O'Quill (now interim minister of the UU Church of Roanoke, VA) expanded on Rev. Lorenzen's post. He noted that "People won't go to church to belong to an institution, but they will become of a part of a community where something compelling is 'happening.'" He does not mean the workshop on addictions on Feb. 5 or the International Dinner on Feb. 9 (though both are happening here!). Rather than focusing on specific programs, he notes:

Maybe what happens is a spiritual transformation, maybe what happens is that people are empowered to fight hunger, maybe what happens is that people are equipped to be change agents and leaders in the community.

[Disclaimer: I am a member of a ministry cohort w/ both Revs. Lorenzen and Owen-O'Quill that explores Missional church perspectives on UUism, and I consider them both friends. My bias aside, I do believe their perspectives are compelling. Links to their articles are below.]

The only point I can add is about welcoming as a vital aspect of this shift in focus. Rev. Lorenzen is right that "the world doesn't need more of us." Our church does not need more people (as such)...but more people need our church. Thousands of people in Guilford County and beyond are hungry for the power and promise of Unitarian Universalism. By being the best church we can, by focusing on organic, maturational, and incarnational growth, we prepare our church to receive and welcome those who seek us out. As we move toward the end of our interim ministry, I look forward to us finding new ways to ask and answer the title question of Rev. Owen-O'Quill's post, "What's Happening at Church?"

In faith, Rev. Eric Posa
From Cindy Dillard, RE Coordinator

Cindy Dillard

Late last year, Rev. Eric Posa and I took part in a highly-charged meeting with adults in our congregation who have devoted hundreds of hours to working with our youth-both adults who have partnered with our church and families for a number of years, and adults who have more recently stepped up to the plate to support our youth/young adults.

At issue: how do we best serve our youth and young adults? This challenge is not unique to UUs. It is a challenge facing many faith traditions. Children come to church largely due to their parent/guardian's choices. But as children grow up, attending church as youth/young adults becomes more an issue decided by themselves. And so faith becomes a self-determined choice, as our children become youth, who then continue the journey, as they become young adults. But how are we supporting our youth/young adults? How are we helping them feel welcome? How are we actively integrating them into the life of our church? And how are we supporting them to become lifelong UU's?

Please join Eric and me for a meeting on Sunday, Feb. 10, 12:30-2:00p in rooms 4/5. We want to hear your ideas for the future of UUCG programming for youth/young adults -and would like to share some ideas of our own. BTW Youth/Young Adult attendance is encouraged.

A light lunch will be served-RSVP's appreciated so we can plan.

Namaste,

Cindy Dillard

UUCG RE Coordinator

From the Congregational Vice President - Karen Madrone

Karen Madrone

The Coordinating Council kicked off the Many Hands Make Light Work project on January 20th. This is a great opportunity for members to get involved with the work of the church. Just take a hand out of the chalice that is attached to the library window, write your name on the other side of the hand and drop it inside the chalice, and also write your name on the spreadsheet on the table in front of the window. The majority of the tasks are finite and time limited. These are easy ways to be part of the work of the church.

The board was very pleased with the turnout for the visioning service on January 20th and with the large turnout for the meeting after the service. We felt that it was a productive meeting that gave us good information to move forward with our work towards having a developmental minister come to UUCG in the fall. The first meeting of the Strategic Planning meeting was held on January 24th. If you would like to join this committee, please contact Charlotte Hamlin.

At the board meeting the Annual Commitment Time (ACT) team gave a report with budget recommendations. The board voted to set a goal of $174,367 for the pledge campaign, which is an average increase of $12 a month per pledge unit. The board believes if everyone who is currently pledging increases their pledge by $12 a month, and every member who is not currently pledging pledges $12 a month, we will meet this goal. Next month all members and friends will be sent a pledge card. Members will be asked to make their pledge, state if they will make an additional pledge to the UUA and district fees in October, and asked if they can make a commitment of time and talent for UUCG. We need all members to be committed to the future of our church. Please consider increasing your pledge by $12, if not more. Let's do everything we can to be on the same team, rowing the same direction.

On February 16th there will be an all church workday. All are welcome to come clean, fix, repair our church home. The all church workday is a great opportunity to connect with others while helping the church.

I believe that love is an action verb, the work of the church is love in action. Thank you.

Mediation Theories and Practices

Donya Lucas

UUCG Church Member and Nursery Care Coordinator, Donya Lucas, will be offering a free class, Mediation Theories and Practices on Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm, January through May, as part of a graduation requirement from the Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies at UNCG. The class will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro. A childcare rotation could be established by interested parents. Donya will maintain a list of interested families.

Whenever students are given opportunities to tryout some of the skills they have learned there will be a reflection and feedback period following the practice, for students to explore what worked well and might not have worked as well. Mediators need to learn how to think on their feet and the more tools they have readily at their disposal, they better able they will be to navigate an unfolding mediation session.

The class will involve a lot of discussion of the readings. The readings and discussion will be very important in helping students understand the philosophical underpinnings of the various forms of practice. The discussions should be particularly helpful for students seeking to orient their own values with the various forms of practice. There will be many opportunities to practice various skills and the process as a whole, in role-plays. Those who want to continue their study of mediation beyond this class will be invited to form a UUCG team of lay mediators.

We will be studying Narrative Mediation, Transformative Mediation and Facilitative Mediation. We will also be learning how to use mediation and conflict resolution skills with children. My hope is that this class will be a collaboration, wherein students will be responsible for their own learning and where we all help each other learn. This means that if you miss a few classes, then your classmates will help you and help each other review what they have learned by bringing you up to speed. Students will be asked to pick a chapter to create some discussion questions for. Then students will practice facilitating the class discussion using the discussion questions. This will help students get comfortable facilitating, asking good questions, supporting the conversation, reflecting and summarizing.

Please come out and join us. Books can be ordered on-line. Some spare copies may be available through RE. They will be kept in Cindy Dillard's office. We welcome people who can't make it every week or who would like to join at any point during the semester.

Adult RE - By Steve Pearsall
Adult Religious Education: Today, Tomorrow, and Beyond

Steven Pearsall

Today - Right now, we have Adult RE offerings on Sunday mornings at 9:30 and Thursday evenings from 6:00-8:00. I would like to thank everyone who has led or taken time from their busy lives to participate. We have studied our UU heritage, explored our spirituality, made new friends and deepened connections with old ones. It would not have been possible without you.

Tomorrow - Classes are ongoing between now and May. We have Charlotte leading a class on communications skills Sunday mornings in February. Thursday nights there are at least three groups planned. Mediation, meditation, and working with fiber (sewing, knitting, etc...). I am referring to it as "The Warp and Woof of Unitarian Universalism". Please try and join in.

Beyond - The future holds a lot of promise for continuing Adult RE programming. This summer there are plans to hold a UU Tapestry of Faith class on Sunday mornings (Tapestry of Faith is a collection of RE curricula freely available on the UUA website. They have offerings for all ages including many for adults. All we need to add is time, people, and a place to hold the class.). Wednesday nights will have the usual information about our annual General Assembly of the UUA and there is some talk about viewing TED talks together. Next Fall we look to continue what we have done and build an ongoing program. We could use help from all of you. If you have an idea, want to help facilitate, or just have some feedback please let me (Steve Pearsall) know. See you in class.

Why I am part of the Worship Team - By Barbara Hands
Worship Team
Rev. Pose discusses plans for the upcoming Christmas Eve Service with Joan Skokan
(right) and Barbara Hands
(left).

UUCG provides us with a community of spiritually like minded individuals; many of us are on individual paths and we respect that in each other. I have found that being a part of the Worship Team at UUCG is the perfect way for me to express my path.

The Worship Team, along with the Minister, works to provide compelling and diversified worship services. The team is responsible for the nuts and bolts of the service: coordinating flower donations, booking ushers and a service leader, ensuring the candles are lit, and that the Minister or guest speaker has all he or she needs to minister to the congregation, etc. But we also seek out and provide guest speakers when the Minister is gone. If the speaker is from outside the congregation, we work closely with that person to make sure that what we look for in a worship experience and our Order of Service are understood.

In addition, the Worship Team is responsible for providing worship aspects to other church functions. For instance, we make sure there is a leader for the short worship services that takes place just prior to the luncheon provided on church workdays and we help make sure there is someone to provide a meal blessing at pot lucks and other church-wide meal functions.

Our Team needs to grow in size. If this sounds like something that is right up your alley, please come to a meeting and consider joining the Worship Team. It could be the perfect vehicle for expressing your spirituality. Our next meeting is February 6. After that we will be meeting the first Wednesday night of each month. All meetings are at 7:30PM in the Minister's office. Nora Bird and Joan Skokan, also members of the Worship Team, will be able to answer any questions you might have. Come join in on the fun of helping to provide for the spiritual needs of UUCG.

Preparing for the UUCG's Annual Meeting
Chalice Logo

At our annual meeting in May, the congregation will elect a new Treasurer, Secretary, two Board of Trustees members, and one member of the Committee on Endowment. From February through April, the Committee on Leadership Development will be identifying members to run for these offices. We are seeking members of the congregation who will provide strong leadership to help UUCG continue to make changes in our governance and culture to enhance the health of the congregation and help prepare us for a new developmental minister.

If you have a desire to serve the church, know someone who does, or if you have recommendations for others, please contact a member of the committee and/or fill out one of the nomination forms that will be at the church on Sunday mornings.

On the fence? Thinking about running but wonder what serving on the Board is like? Talk with one of our current Board members; their names and photographs are on the bulletin board in the hall outside the kitchen. Talk with someone who has served in the past. You'll hear what a rewarding and, yes, at times challenging experience it is. Service to the congregation is an important way that we act on one of the 7 UU Principles, "the use of the democratic process within our congregations."

In addition, nominations for the Committee on Leadership Development will be made from the floor and elected at the May meeting, so be thinking of and talking with people you believe would be effective members and willing to serve in that capacity.

Thank you for your help in assuring that UUCG has strong leadership in the coming year,

Hat Day is February 24

black hat Our annual Hat Day is the last Sunday in February, the 24th.  Wear a hat and enjoy the uplifted spirits in the dead of winter.  If you don't have a hat borrow one or make one.  We've seen very creative hats made by our congregants throughout the years.  Some were very simple folded newspaper ones to gallon-milk jugs fashioned into amazing hats.

Our Hat Day started back in the late 70's when a visiting minister traded pulpits with our settled minister, Wyman Rousseau.  The minister stated to us that we should surprise Wyman by wearing hats the next Sunday.  We discovered that the energy was elevated by wearing hats that day, and the tradition continued through the years.

Remember February 24 is the day to wear a hat.   Thanks!
