GEK at Marquette School
Global Explorers Kids is participating in a residency at Marquette School of Excellence during the 2015/16 school year. A longtime partner, this marks the fourth school year GEK has had programming at the school.
The current residency meets with ten classrooms--five Kindergarten rooms and five first grade rooms-- throughout most of the school year. About 250 students are participating in weekly sessions, learning about world cultures through the arts. Thematic units have included masks from around the world, fabric arts, and projects relating to the school's international day countries. Children have created Junkanoo masks, hand built mini clay masks inspired by the mud men masks of Papua New Guinea, designed Puerto Rican Vejigante figures, and more. For fabric arts, children made felt squares while learning about the role of felt in Mongolia, dyed Nigerian adire-inspired scarves, designed paper quilt squares based on African-American quilting traditions, created faux-batiks, and explored other fabric art techniques.
Currently preparing for their school's international day, students are creating art projects, hearing stories, playing games, and making flags from countries they are studying with their homeroom teachers. Various Kindergarten classes are exploring China, Trinidad, Ecuador, Kenya, the Bahamas, and Indonesia, while First graders are exploring Colombia, Vietnam, Ireland, Bahrain, Cuba, and Malaysia.

In Memory of a Beloved Teacher: Marian Hayes
It is with a saddened heart that we had to say goodbye to one of our beloved teachers this past January. Marian Hayes, Miss Marian, was not only an important part of Global Explorers Kids, but an active member of Chicago's arts community, being involved in projects at the Southside Community Art Center, the DuSable Museum, and Sous Terrain, a gallery she created at Tuley Park.
As a studio artist concentrating on African-American quilting and fabric arts and photography, she taught and exhibited her work throughout the city. She founded Chicago State University's fabric club and was nominated as Professional Quilt Teacher by Professional Quilter Magazine. As a writer, she published several books of poetry and participated in live readings.
Marian was heavily involved in Chicago State University, where she earned her MA in art and produced radio broadcasts. Her "Cafe YeYe," the longest running show at WCSU, featured world music, jazz and interviews with artists, organizations, activists and politicians.
A gentle soul, Miss Marian touched many lives, and brought happiness to many through her talents as an artist and a teacher. Rest well, sweet Marian.

Children's Ofrenda at Day of the Dead in the City of Chicago Event
This past November, Global Explorers Kids participated in the National Museum of Mexican Art's Day of the Dead in the City of Chicago community event. GEK displayed a children's ofrenda, created by the Kindergarten and 1st grade students participating in our residency at Marquette School of Excellence.
After learning about the holiday, the children created artwork for the ofrenda--including paper marigolds, papel picado, and various skeleton themed projects. Each child was also given the opportunity to create a picture, dedicating the ofrenda to a loved one who has passed. Grandparents, uncles, parents, siblings, friends, even beloved pets were honored and remembered by the children.
The children's ofrenda was displayed with other community ofrendas outside the Museum, viewed by thousands of attendees. This was an excellent opportunity for the children to not only learn about the traditions and art of other cultures, and to reflect on how death has touched their lives, but to see themselves as an important part of a larger community.
