Aang!

Greetings!

That is how to say hello in Aleut.

This is an exciting summer and we hope you can join us at one of our events! Read about our new collaboration with the Chicago Park District's Night Out in the Parks initiative below and try to join us for one of these fun programs. We will also be returning to the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival on July 18-19, 1-6 pm to help children make corn husk dolls and paint Moroccan tiles. We are still looking for volunteers to help at this event, so if you have a couple of hours to spend making art with kids, let us know!

And don't forget about our summer camp, offered at Luther Memorial Church. There's still room! Sign up information is below.

Night Out in the Parks: A Global Celebration of Peace

This summer, Global Explorers Kids is pleased to partner with the Chicago Park District Night Out in the Parks series to offer three free community-based programs. Grab your families and join us for a Global Celebration of Peace. Make Flags of Peace (inspired by Tibetan prayer flags), create your own world percussion instruments and join in a community drum circle, and enjoy cooperative games and/or stories of peace from around the world.  We will be at three parks in three different parts of the city. Join us for one or all three events!

Saturday, July 11, 6-8 pm
Abbott Park --  49 E 95th Street

Tuesday, August 4, 6-8 pm
Commercial Club Playground -- 1845 W Rice Street

Wednesday, August 12, 6-8 pm
Pottawattomie Park -- 7340 N Rodgers Avenue

Global Explorers Kids' Global Celebration of Peace is presented as part of the Chicago Park District's Night Out in the Parks series, supported by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Arts programming in neighborhoods across the city advances the goals of the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Cultural Plan. Now in its third year, the 2015 Night Out in the Parks series will host over 1,000 events and programs at more than 250 neighborhood parks throughout the city, making community parks a safe haven and hubs of activity. Projects will vary from traditional performances and concerts, to movies, peace rallies, community workshops, nature based programs, dance pieces, festivals, and more. The Chicago Park District has partnered with more than 80 arts and community organizations to expand and produce this successful initiative.

Marquette Residency

Global Explorers Kids was thrilled to continue our partnership with Marquette School of Excellence, teaching a five month residency this past spring. Ten Kindergarten and 1st grade classes -- nearly 300 students in all -- met weekly to learn about cultures through the arts. Students focused on three mini-units: Holidays Around the World, Artist as Peacemaker, and projects focused around the countries they were studying for the World Fest. Students worked in a variety of styles and media, including printmaking, paper arts, drawing, masking tape sculpture, fabric collage, and others, while learning about artistic and cultural traditions around the world.

Student artwork was exhibited during Marquette's World Fest, including colorful Carnival figures that were created as group classroom projects, and Tibetan prayer flag-inspired Flags of Peace. The children were excited to see their work adorning the entrance lobby of the school, to be admired by all the schoolmates, families, and community members who entered the school!

Summer Camp 2015 registration is now open!

Let your children travel the world this summer through Global Explorers Kids' popular summer camp. Held at Luther Memorial Church, 2500 W Wilson, Chicago, for children ages 4-10, the camp is scheduled for August 17-28, 2015, 9:00 am - 11:30 am.

With "passports" in hand, children will explore cultures and countries from around the world - "visiting" a different country every day through dramatic play, arts and crafts, movement, storytelling, flag making, and more. Countries/cultures "visited" this summer include:  South Africa, Guatemala, Bulgaria, Egypt, India, Haiti, Ireland, South Korea, and the Inuit and Maori cultures. Registration is $130/week or $250 for both weeks.

School Programming

The 2014/15 school year was a busy one for us! After school classes were offered at Waters Elementary School, Disney II Elementary School, and HOPE Institute Learning Academy, where kids created a variety of projects, including Nigerian adire inspired tie-dye, Indonesian shadow puppets, and Day of the Dead masks.

In-school programs were held at Marquette School of Excellence, All About Kids Learning Academy, Love N Learn Academy, and Lakeshore Learning Academy, providing long term residencies for entire classes. Students explored hands-on art making while learning about the arts, cultures, and customs of peoples around the world.
