xin cho!
That is how to say hello in Vietnamese.
We had a wonderful summer, helping children at the Roosevelt High School Unity Fest create flags of peace, inspired by Tibetan prayer flags. We also enjoyed Evanston's Ethnic Arts Festival again this summer, where we showed fair attendees how to create their own Hamsa hands and African drums. After a rewarding summer camp and summer programming at Legends South, we are ready for the school year! Read more about upcoming and past programs below. And, as always:
Happy Explorations!

School Classes Start Next Week

School season is upon us once again and we are looking forward to another rewarding year bringing cultural arts programming to children in various schools.
Our long-running after school program at
Waters Elementary in Lincoln Square is set to begin next Wednesday, September 17th. Registration is through the Right at School Website. This term's theme is Masks Around the World. Children will be exploring the arts of mask making as they create several masks inspired by the world's cultures.
Our preschool programs at All About Kids Learning Academy, in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, and Lakeshore Learning Center, in South Chicago will also begin next week, bringing hands-on cultural arts activities to 45 preschoolers, ages 3-5. A new preschool program at Love N Learn Academy, also in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, will bring programming to an additional 20 preschoolers.
We are happy to announce a new partnership with Hope Institute Learning Academy, in the United Center Park neighborhood, offering after school programming to 25 students for 25 weeks.
We look forward to sharing the world's cultures with the students this school year!

Merdeka - Chicago/Bandung Freedom Project
Last spring, 30 first graders at Marquette School of Excellence in Chicago's Marquette Park neighborhood participated in a special cross cultural collaborative project with students at Gagasceria Discovering English in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia: "Merdeka: The Chicago/Bandung Freedom Project."
The students learned about the Indonesian art of batik and created their own faux batik images inspired by Indonesia proverbs about peace and freedom. They also learned about Chicago graffiti art and created graffiti inspired pictures incorporating the words "Freedom" and "Merdeka" (which means freedom in Indonesian).
Throughout the project the students communicated with each other via a blog, and collaborated on a poem/song sharing their thoughts about freedom. The song was put to music by our collaborator, Dan Nicky. You can view some of the students' artwork, read their words, and listen to their song on their blog.

Legends South Summer Programming
This summer, we formed a new partnership with Legends South housing, in the Bronzeville neighborhood. Eighteen students, ages 6-13, participated in our Passport Program, "visiting" a different country each day through art activities, storytelling, movement, music, flag making, and food.
They were a very enthusiastic bunch of students who enjoyed trying new things and getting creative. Through the program, they learned basic printmaking techniques, while creating pictures inspired by Tlingit/Haida prints, explored tie-dying cloths inspired by Nigerian adire, made paintings in the style of Aboriginal dot painting, learned a basic rhythm on the djembe, tried their hand at the Russian Troika dance, made and tasted Peruvian Papas a la Huancaina and Thai spring rolls, and many other activities.
