Aaniin!

That is how to say "Hello" in Ojibwe.

Over the past year, Global Explorers Kids has been thrilled to be a part of two exciting collaborative projects: Ten Thousand Ripples and a collaboration with the International School of Ulaanbaatar. Both of those projects are currently on display at the Loyola University Museum of Art, details are below.

We are looking forward to more opportunities to help children connect across borders and are already planning a project for the coming year. Look to future editions of this newsletter to keep updated!

Children's artwork on exhibit at LUMA

This past spring, second graders participating in Global Explorers Kids' residency at Marquette Elementary School in Chicago and second graders at the International School of Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia collaborated on a cooperative art project and blog.

Through the project, the children learned about the traditional Mongolian art of felt making and created felt "stones" that were mounted in a display inspired by Mongolian ovoo - mounds of stones on roadways and mountain passes offered for good luck. The students also created artwork inspired by Mongolian prayer flags.

Their projects and blog postings are now on display at the Loyola University Museum of Art's student Pushpin Gallery, 820 N Michigan Ave. During the opening reception, the students and their families were treated to juice and snacks, provided by the Loyola University Museum of Art, and were able to print additional flags to take home. Global Explorers Kids, on behalf of the students of the International School of Ulaanbaatar, presented Marquette School with a silk scarf -- a traditional Buddhist form of honor and good will -- as well as a card signed by the students. The exhibit will remain on display through January 19, 2014, when it will travel to Mongolia.

Check out our facebook page for more photos from the exhbit, as well as future updates about a planned interview with some of the students on Radio Disney! Be sure to friend us while you are there!

Ten Thousand Ripples Exhibit at LUMA

TTR exhibit Also on view at the Loyola University Museum of Art is the Ten Thousand Ripples exhibit, documenting the city-wide public art project spearheaded by artist Indira Johnson, in conjunction with Changing Worlds and organizations throughout the city. Through the project, 100 Buddha heads were installed in ten Chicago communities with companion programming bringing peace-themed initiatives to youth and residents.

Global Explorers Kids is thrilled to have been a participating organization, offering artist as peacemaker classes to children at North River Elementary School in Albany Park. Look for documentation of our participation in the Albany Park display in the exhibit.

Ten Thousand Ripples remains on display at the Loyola University Museum of Art, 820 N. Michigan Ave, through November 3.
2013/14 Preschool Programs Begin

Global Explorers Kids is pleased to announce that we are once again teaming up with our long-time partner, All About Kids Learning Academy, in Chicago's Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood, to offer cultural programming to their preschool. In addition, we have begun a new preschool program at the Lakeside Learning Academy, in South Chicago.  Through these two programs, each week, approximately 60 children, ages 2-5, will participate in  hands-on art activities. The projects will introduce them to different countries and cultures while also giving them the opportunity to experiment with a variety of art materials. They will stamp adinkra designs from Ghana, decorate Indian diya lamps, create dot paintings inspired by the Aborigines of Australia, and explore many other forms of art.
