Sawubona!
Greetings! That is how to say "Hello" in Zulu.
This has been an exciting and busy school year. We served children at Waters, Nettelhorst, Blaine, and North River Schools during after school programs, and held an ongoing residency at Marquette School. We participated in the Albany Park Ten Thousand Ripples project, consulted on art projects with the Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club, and are working on a cooperative project with the International School of Ulaanbaatar.
As the school year draws to a close, we are looking forward to an equally busy summer and planning for next year. See below for details on our upcoming summer camp. We will also be participating in the Goethe School fest on May 18, the Disney II School Explore More Art event on June 1, and the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival on July 20-21. Check out our Facebook page for updates on these and other coming events.

A Day in the Life....Chicago and Ulaanbaatar
Global Explorers Kids is partnering with the International School of Ulaanbaatar on a very special project. Second graders participating in Global Explorers Kids' residency at Marquette Elementary School in Chicago and second graders at the International School of Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia will be learning about each other's countries and cultures through a cooperative art project and a blog.
The children will be creating art around the themes "A Day in the Life" and "Peace Across Cultures." Learning about the traditional Mongolian art of felt making, children will create felt "stones" that will be exhibited in a display inspired by Mongolian ovoo - mounds of stones on roadways and mountain passes offered for good luck. Children are also creating artwork inspired by Mongolian prayer flags. The artwork from the two countries will be brought together and displayed in Chicago in the fall. It will later be displayed in Mongolia.
The children have started communicating with each other via a blog "A Day in the LIfe...Chicago and Ulaanbaatar." They have been sharing their discussions on topics such as "When I look out my window, I see...," "The Seasons," and "Holidays." They will continue adding to the blog throughout the school year. Please visit their site and feel free to add encouraging comments!

Fundraiser Success!
On February 15, Global Explorers Kids celebrated our annual Carnival fundraiser--Carnival de Amor y Amistad. In true Carnival fashion, food was a focus, with many delicious treats donated by super volunteer Sandy Devura, as well as fabulous food donations from Dawalis Mediterranean Kitchen, Rosded Thai Restaurant, and Einstein Bros. Bagels. We were treated to Samba dance lessons with Yaasha Abraham, as the King and Queen of Samba were crowned. Face painting, crafts of love from around the world, the lucky dip game, and pancake races were a hit with the kids, while the adults perused silent auction items, and rocked out to music by Mumble the Peg. The event was our most successful fundraiser ever, raising over $3,000 for programming in the current year. Thank you to everyone who attended; our sponsor Avon Cosmetics; our wonderful volunteers from Noble Street College Prep, the Museum of Science & Industry, and our fundraising committee; the amazing musicians and entertainers; Ladybug Gaga (Pam Chermansky); and the local businesses who contributed food and prizes toward the event. We couldn't have done it without you! For a complete list of business donors, please visit our website. Check out our facebook page for more photos from the event.

After School Update
After school sessions are drawing to a close for the current school year. We just finished a session at Blaine Elementary School, focusing on the artist as peacemaker. Children created art projects inspired by Tibetan prayer flags, Nkisi figures from the Congo, Chilean arpilleras, Native American talking sticks, and Indonesian shadow puppets, and created peace poem books inspired by the book "What Does Peace Feel Like?"
Children at Waters Elementary School are working on a unit on World Mythology. They are learning about flood myths around the world and will be creating shadow puppets and Greek theater masks to share a couple of the myths with family and friends.

Help Us Bring Free Programming to Children
Through the generosity of our donors, we are able to offer full scholarships to children on the free lunch program and bring free programs to several schools that serve low-income communities. In order to continue serving these children, every year we need to raise funds to cover the costs programs. Help us bring the world to these children. Consider making a secure online donation today. |
