Happy Holidays!

Greetings!
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanzaa, Happy New Year....Whatever holiday you are celebrating this season, we wish you the happiest of days filled with love, friendship, peace, and tranquility.

The past few months, we've been very busy bringing world cultures to children through the arts. Besides our after school programs and residencies that you'll read more about below, we recently participated in the Albany Park CAPS Trunk-or-Treating event on Halloween and the Lincolnwood Library Ethnic Fest--a yearly favorite! If you'd like to be regularly posted on upcoming events, "like" us on Facebook

Join us for a student showcase and community potluck at North River School

Ten Thousand Ripples: Albany Park, North River School, and Global Explorers Kids invite you to join us for a potluck community celebration of peace, 5-7 pm on Thursday, December 13th, at North River School, 4416 N Troy in Chicago. The evening will feature an exhibit and performance by students participating in North River School's Global Explorers Kids after school residency and the opportunity to participate in a community art project. Feel free to bring a dish to share in the potluck dinner.
Ten Thousand Ripples Project

TTR Buddah head
This past fall, Global Explorers Kids has been providing educational initiatives for the Albany Park Ten Thousand Ripples project, part of a larger Ten Thousand Ripples (TTR) citywide public art project taking place in ten Chicago neighborhoods. Through TTR, Albany Park, and other Chicago neighborhoods, have received ten fiberglass Buddha heads to be placed in public spaces throughout the community. The Buddha heads are donated by Indira Johnson, award-winning artist and peace activist and founder of the Ten Thousand Ripples project. TTR is engaging arts educators, community residents, and local organizations from each participating neighborhood in dialogues and projects centered on uniting each community and embracing its diversity.

Since GEK has established its effectiveness in engaging children in peace-themed art projects and already has a strong presence in Albany Park, community leaders requested that GEK lead children's art activities at North River School in Albany Park. GEK instructors have led two classrooms of students in peace arts initiatives. Students in grades 3-5 are working with performer/teaching artists Pam Chermansky and Mars Caulton to develop, rehearse, and perform an original theater piece with a theme of peace. Students in grades K-2 have been working with teaching artists Holly Hutto and Marian Hayes to explore the issue of artist as peacemaker, learning various ways that artists/artwork have been used as tools for peace in different cultures.
The students' final projects will be showcased at an exhibit/performance/potluck to be held on December 13. See the article above for more information on the event.

Residency at Marquette School of Excellence

jonkonnu masks Global Explorers Kids is proud to partner with the Marquette School of Excellence, providing an arts residency throughout the entire 2012/13 school year. Global Explorers Kids instructors are teaching the art classes for approximately 125 second graders every week. Students are focusing on three units: Masks Around the World, Storytelling Traditions, and the Artist as Peacemaker. Just finishing the mask making unit, students have learned about and created masks inspired by Carnival masks, Greek theater masks, Dogon Dama masks from Mali, Day of the Dead masks, Jonkonnu masks from the Caribbean, and Y'upik spirit masks from Alaska. After the holiday break, students will learn about the many ways of sharing a story, including Japanese Kamishibai story theaters, Hmong story cloths, totem poles, and Indonesian shadow puppets.

Marquette School is in the Marquette Park neighborhood of Chicago, serving a student population that is 58% Hispanic, 42% African-American, and over 95% low income.

After School Update
During Fall 2012, Global Explorers Kids has been providing after school classes to children at Waters Elementary School, Blaine Elementary School, Nettelhorst Elementary School, and North River Elementary School. Children at these schools have been exploring the world through hands-on art projects. While creating artwork inspired by various cultures, students have been learning about houses, masks, and holidays from around the world, as well as how the arts are used for peacemaking.

After winter break, new sessions will begin. Contact us at globalexplorerskids@yahoo.com for information about programs at your school, or if you are interested in starting a Global Explorers Kids after school program at your school or organization.
Help Us Bring Free Programming to Children
Through the generosity of our donors, we are able to offer full scholarships to children on the free lunch program and bring free programs to several schools that serve low-income communities. In order to continue serving these children, every year we need to raise funds to cover the costs programs. Help us bring the world to these  children.
