Long-tongued Bat at Calabash Treeflower by Greg Basco Long-tongued bats (Glossophagasp.) are important pollinators of rainforest plants. Indeed, scientists estimate that up to 25% of neotropical rainforest plants are bat-pollinated. These long-tongued bats are attracted to plants such as the native Calabash tree (Crescentia cujete, Bignoniaceae) in part by fragrance, and this flower exhibited a strong garlicky smell that intensified at night. Equipment Used: Canon 5D II, Canon 70-300 mm f/4-5.6 Lzoom, tripod, Phottix radio transmitter/receivers, 5 Yongnuo flashes, f/13, 5 seconds, ISO 500. Here's your chance to photograph bats (just like this one) in Costa Rica! Join Greg Downing and Greg Basco for a Tropical Birds and More workshop in January 2015. Learn More

Photography Equipment Is the 80-400 Actually a 300mm on Small Birds? Posted by Blck-shouldered Kite Am I missing something in what is being said in the link below? Synopsis: Brad Hill set out to see just how sharp the new 80–400 was compared to his 200–400 and 400 f2.8. He set up about 16 feet away from a “studio stump” on his BC property to…

Photography Equipment D7100 1.3 Crop Factor = 2x Actual Factor? Posted by Blck-shouldered Kite I believe I understand how they arrive at effectively 2 times the lenses focal length. But I would love to hear from any of you who actually have their Nikon “supertele” (minimum 300mm) attached to this D7100 and are using it in 1.3 crop…

Photography Equipment Upgrade Advice from 7D to 70D Posted by mikephotorasa I currently have a 7D and am quite pleased with it. It’s well balanced and processes multiple raw shots very quickly but its getting a bit old now. However, the new 70D seems to offer similar performance along with a flip-out screen and improved video capabilities which I would find quite useful. It’s also got…

Copyright Nikhil Bahl Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G AF-S VR Review by Nikhil Bahl When I bought my first long lens (AF-S NIKKOR 200–400mm f/4G ED VR II Lens) in 2007 I didn’t even consider the older 80–400mm lens as it was inadequate for my needs. I was looking for a lens to photograph birds and other wildlife. With moving subjects, the auto focus on a lens is critical and the old 80–400mm didn’t cut it. At that time the… Continue reading »
Copyright Nikhil Bahl Compose or Crop? by Nikhil Bahl Composition is an essential aspect of a good photograph. It’s our choice as photographers as to how the elements will be arranged in a photograph.
