Project Giving Tree
Our annual holiday giving program, Project Giving Tree, has begun! Through this program, we ask donors to "adopt" a wish list for the holiday season. With help from many generous donors, we were able to ensure a wonderful holiday season last year for the several hundred girls and women in our programs, and we hope to be able to do the same this coming year! If you are interested in more information or being involved in this project please contact Jenny Clement, Volunteer Services Manager, at (313) 361-4000 x248.

Greetings!

"The staff at Alternatives For Girls had faith in me when I didn't have faith in myself and that made me feel like I actually served a purpose," Alaya, a participant in AFG's Prevention Department, shared.

Before coming to Alternatives For Girls, Alaya struggled with school and was having problems at home. "I had no motivation, and a bad attitude," Alaya remembers. Her frustration reached a boiling point one day and she ran away from home. "My mom called me and she was really worried. Hearing her worry killed me inside and I decided to come home," Alaya explains. Alaya's mom realized she needed to get Alaya extra support before it was too late, that's when she called Alternatives For Girls.

Since coming to AFG's After-School Program, Alaya has improved her Grade Point Average (GPA) from a 0.89 GPA to a 2.5 GPA and is still working towards her goal of earning a 4.0 GPA!  Her participation in the after-school workshops has also helped her find a new motivation, "Before AFG I didn't care about school or anyone else's feelings, but now I've matured a lot, I have faith in myself, and I'm excited about my future!" Alaya says, smiling.

Because of your support, young women like Alaya are improving their grades, setting goals for the future, and making positive choices. Click here to help change the ending for at-risk girls and women today!

Prevention Halloween Party
Trick or Treaters
On October 29th, AFG was filled with witches, vampires, and of course a few Princess Elsa's. Prevention's annual Halloween party attendees spent the night trick-or-treating through the halls of AFG!

Staff members decked the halls with creepy decorations, set up fun game stations, and put on some Halloween music to top it all off. The trick-or-treater's enjoyed a creepy crawl space (complete with fake spiders and spider webs), bowls filled with "bones" and "eyeballs", and a fun ghost balloon pop game!

After each participant completed the adventure, the girls counted their treats and spent the rest of the evening recounting the madness. Thanks to the Prevention staff, volunteers and interns, it was definitely a night the girls won't forget!

Volunteer Opportunities
Mentoring:
AFG is currently seeking mentors for two programs, Face Forward and the Asset-Building Project.

Face Forward serves young women and young men between the ages of 16-24 years old who have prior juvenile justice involvement. Volunteer mentors build a one-on-one relationship with their mentee and serve as a positive role model. Face Forward mentors must commit to spending four hours a month with their mentee. Male and female mentors are needed.

The Asset-Building Project serves middle school girls enrolled in AFG's After-School Program. Mentors provide academic support and assist with homework and post-secondary exploration activities. The Asset-Building Project is looking for mentors who can make a two-year commitment and spend at least ten hours a month with their mentee. We are also seeking mentors who are bilingual in English and Spanish.

Street Outreach:
AFG's Street Outreach program reaches out to girls and women who are in crisis or at-risk. They engage contacts in conversation, offer material assistance and referral information. Volunteers work alongside veteran volunteers and staff. Volunteers receive extensive training before starting outreach and are currently needed for Wednesday and Thursday evening shifts.

After-School Program Assistant
Our After-School Program (ASP) serves girls from elementary to high school. Tuesday through Thursday from 3-7:30pm, ASP participants receive homework help and then take part in educational workshops.  Volunteer opportunities include driving assistants, homework helpers, tutors, and assistance with food preparation.

For more information on how to become a volunteer at AFG, please contact our Volunteer Services Manager, Jenny Clement, at 313-361-4000 x248 or volunteering@alternativesforgirls.org.
