Melody Moore, AFG's Life Skills Curriculum Coordinator, was the keynote speaker for the night and gave the young women the advice, "As you move forward and make other decisions, remember choice is Creating Habits Of Integrity, Compassion, Empowerment, this will help you live a powerful life."
Looking forward to the future
The young women of the high school group shared what graduating and AFG has meant to them.
- Sarah will be attending the University of Michigan- Flint this fall. She shared, "Graduating means finding a new chapter in y our life." Sarah is looking forward to new experiences, independence, and having fun at school.
- Cornesha is off to Wayne State University to major in Nursing. She is looking forward to new experiences, challenges and studying abroad in Italy or Russia. Cornesha shared, "Graduating means the first step to a successful life."
- Tyler, a Peer Educator said, "Being wise and cautious could lead you through any battle and keeping faith in ourselves is key. AFG has taught me to be a proud and empowered American girl whose limits are endless."
Celebrating success
This past year, 100% of high school seniors from all three programs who were eligible to graduate not only graduated, but are pursuing higher education. We are very proud of all the young women at AFG and wish them the best in their future endeavors.

A Journey to Fight Human Trafficking
| |
This article was written by Tyler, an AFG Peer Educator on AFG's Love CHAT team. Through internet outreach, members of Love CHAT educate youth about HIV, STDs, healthy relationships, and more.
As a Peer Educator, it is essential to be a positive leader and role model. In return, we develop key traits that build our character. As Love CHAT's team leader, I was recruited with the other team leaders for an educational road trip. We went on an adventure from Toledo, Ohio to Louisville, Kentucky, observing the similarities and differences in services and outreach efforts at nonprofits across our nation. During this journey we interviewed several anti-human trafficking advocates about their motivation of addressing the issue. During the two-day trip, I bonded with my fellow peer education team leaders and staff.
As I gathered my things and packed my bags to leave, I pondered on how human trafficking affects us: Who are the victims? How are people brought into those predicaments? What impact does it have on our society? How can we spread awareness?
Many people aren't emotionally attached to the term human trafficking, slightly because they are unaware of its meaning. At the same time one may ask, "Why should I care?" As I've learned from AFG and the road trip, anyone could be a victim, and everyone can be a potential target. How could one prevent being trafficked; is it even possible? Many people don't realize how human trafficking affects our community, yet, it's the second most common crime internationally. I believe it is important to acknowledge this issue because it exists in our society as well. Innocent families are torn apart as someone else makes a profit. If everyone pitched in for the sake of victims and spread awareness, human trafficking could cease.

Recently, the Jewish Women's Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit donated funds to AFG that will allow us to purchase a new van to be used for our programs. AFG's vans are used for street outreach, to provide transportation for our after-school programs, and more.
AFG would like to extend a huge thank you to the Jewish Women's Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit for this much-needed gift!
