Dreams of AFG
Dreams of AFG
Check out the video above to hear some of the dreams of the young women of AFG--and how they're already achieving them!
Blazing New Trails

The young women bounce over yet another wave in their large blue raft, guiding it over to the edge of the river near a large boulder. Their guide invites them to climb up higher and higher until they reach the top and are invited to jump down into the river.

Most of the young women show some trepidation, but Frantrina is fearless. She marches up to the edge and gazes down into the river below. Taking a deep breathe, she leaps off the edge, at first feeling terror, and then overwhelming joy.

Frantrina is one of several young women who are a part of the reignited Adventure Club. Adventure Club allows the young women of AFG to experience the joys of nature through outdoor experiences. The Club was disbanded a few years ago due to a lack of funding, but thanks to generous donations from individuals to our fall appeal last year along with a grant from the Born & Raised Detroit Foundation (BARD), the club has been reformed.

So far, there have been two trips: A skiing trip this winter and a camping trip in Pennsyvania at the end of June. The most recent trip included rustic camping, ziplining, white water rafting, making s'mores, and more.

Jasmine and Frantrina were a part of both trips, and they glow as they recount their adventures. Jasmine loved white water rafting. "It really requires teamwork. I didn't think I would ever get to do that in my life," she grins. Prior to these trips, Jasmine had never experienced camping before.

Frantrina not only loved the activities, but the chance to get to sit back and enjoy nature. "It felt good to just sit there feeling relaxed, enjoying yourself, not really having to worry about anything," she recalls. She loved being able to stare at the night sky without the effects of light pollution. "The stars were so pretty," she remembers. "I just stay outside looking up at the sky forever!"

While the young women become animated as they describe their adventures, they are equally enthusiastic when talking about the bond they gained as a group. When Jasmine is asked to recall her favorite trip experience, she immediately replies, "Trusting my team. I cried on the zipline, and they helped me get across and let me know everything was OK."

Frantrina shares Jasmine's sentiments. "We learned how to work together to get things done faster," she explains. "We learned support. We cheered each other on."

AFG would like to thank the countless individuals who made these trips possible through their financial support along with the generous support from the Born & Raised Detroit Foundation. Stay tuned for news of future Adventure Club trips!
Current Volunteer Opportunities

 Resource Center:

The Resource Center serves as a crisis line and crisis drop-in site. Resource Center volunteers provide material resources and referrals to individuals on the phone and in person.  Training will be provided. We prefer at least a one year commitment of two or more shifts per month.

Street Outreach:

The Safe Choices Project works with women involved in commercial sex work, most often prostitution and/or exotic dancing. It helps these women practice safer, healthier behaviors, provides support and resources for them while involved in commercial sex work, and, when they choose, assists them in exiting sex work.  Volunteers have the opportunity to conduct street outreach, which consists of preparing harm reduction kits, other outreach materials, and providing intervention and referrals where appropriate for women engaged in sex work.  We would prefer at least a one year commitment of two or more shifts per month.

Mentoring:

The AFG Mentoring Program currently serves at-risk girls and young women between the ages of 4-18. Volunteer mentors build a positive one-on-one relationship with their mentees by bringing support, commitment, and positive energy to the mentoring relationship. All mentors must be at least 18 years old and be able to make a one year commitment of spending at least four hours a month with their mentee. We are also seeking mentors who are bilingual in English and Spanish.

Blog: Teen Outreach Program
This month's blog was written by Angelique, an AFG Peer Educator and member of the Teen Outreach Program

The Teen Outreach Program (TOP) is a community-based program created to educate teens on various topics and open them up to community service learning opportunities.

TOP is something that I will always hold on to. TOP wasn't just a learning program that we attend two hours a week, but it was a fundamental learning experience. I can definitely say it helped me understand myself.

One lesson that stood out to me in TOP was about female leaders from the past and present. The TOP participants as a group identified the women we felt are role models for us now and who were role models for our elders. The women that were listed ranged from Rosa Parks to Michelle Obama. All the women listed possessed characteristics such as confidence, dedication and humbleness. Since women are sometimes considered inferior to men in today's society, the activity gave us a different outlook on females. It helped us realize how valuable women are to society and how the world would change drastically without women. Click here to read the full blog.

Thank you for taking the time to hear from us!
