Alternatives For Girls News
June 2013
Greetings!
Drumroll please...this year, across all three of our programs, 100% of the young women who were old enough to graduate from high school both graduated and are planning to pursue higher education this fall! This isn't the only exciting news at AFG this month: Our Rise N' Shine summer camp is in full swing, we've invited in members of the community to learn about trauma and trauma-informed care, and we've introduced innovative new programming into our Shelter. Read on to hear more about some of the great things happening this month at AFG!

Peer Educators Make Forts for Cats
PE Cat Forts
Peer Educators decorate cat forts for the Michigan Humane Society

"It was fun because we were building homes for the little kittens," grins Christen, AFG Peer Educator, as she remembers their recent service project.

Over spring breaks, AFG's Peer Educators built 44 cat forts for the felines at the Michigan Humane Society. The group had been looking for a meaningful and fun volunteer project, and when they learned about the need for cat forts, they knew they had found their match.

"They even let us deliver them to the kittens!" Christen recalls. "It was nice to help the cats that were abandoned."

AFG's Peer Educators are a group of high-risk youth who are trained to perform outreach to other youth in the community. They focus on topics ranging from homelessness to HIV/AIDS awareness. This project was a fun way for them to give back to the community in a new way.

Blog: Adventure Therapy
This month's blog was written by Sinita Williams, a counselor in AFG's Shelter.

The Shelter Department has just implemented

a new program called adventure therapy into their Community Group. The term "adventure therapy" is a fairly new concept but has been proven effective when working with at-risk youth. Community Group is co-facilitated by me and Counseling Curriculum Coordinator Erika Fox. The group consist of experiential and activity building activities. Click here to read the full blog.

Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care

In June, Alternatives For Girls and Runaway and Homeless Youth Regional Alliance held an exciting and informative event dedicated to how trauma affects brain development. The training was provided by James Henry Ph.D., Connie Black-Pond MA, LPC, LMSW, and Cara Weiler LMSW, of the Children's Trauma Assessment Center.

What is Trauma?

There are two types of trauma; physical and mental. Physical trauma includes the body's response to serious injury and threat, and mental trauma includes frightening thoughts and painful feelings. There is also secondary trauma, which is the stress resulting from helping or wanting to help a traumatized or suffering person.

Trauma and AFG

Learning how to handle trauma and secondary traumatic stress are very important to the staff of AFG. Staff member Amanda Stein LLMSW planned and coordinated the event after attending a trauma training a year ago, and wanted to share the information and knowledge that she had gained with AFG's staff. "The training has helped me connect more with my clients," shared Amanda.

This was a free training for the staff and of AFG, Starfish, and Common Ground, and metro-area therapists, direct care workers, high school teachers, and AFG volunteers. Participants watched clips from the movie "Freedom Writers" and were able to ask questions based on the trauma they observed in the film.   They also shared their own experiences and Dr. Henry, Ms. Weiler and Ms. Black-Pond were able to address their situations. The event was very successful for both the participants and the facilitators.

Thank you for taking the time to hear from us, and happy summer!

Sincerely,

Amanda (Amy) L. Good
