"A Tale of Two Books" at Bruton Parish on Oct. 24

Bruton Parish, Williamsburg, invites you to join them on Saturday, October 24 a special education program.

The morning session from 10-11:30am will review Craig Hill's 2002 book In God's Time: The Bible and the Future, which seeks to plot a middle course between what the author characterizes as "uncritical infatuation" with and "overhasty divorce" from Christian teaching about Last Things, technically known as eschatology.  In particular, the book attempts to locate the biblical authors within their historical context, demonstrating, in other words, that ideas about the future have a long and fascinating past.  It then considers how the hopes voiced in scripture might yet be relevant to us who live in what is in many ways a radically dissimilar culture.

The afternoon session from 1:30-3pm will introduce a forthcoming book with an entirely different focus: The Greatest Among You: Reclaiming a New Testament Perspective on Status and Ambition.  The book arose out of Prof. Hill's work with mid-career pastors, but the topic is relevant to a much wider audience. It begins by considering the relationship between the natural world and religion, asking how studies of other social animals should influence Christian teaching about status and ambition. The majority of the book then reviews what the New Testament authors did to support viable communities within the highly stratified and status-conscious Roman world of the first century.  In this respect at least, there is little difference between life then and now, and what the New Testament has to say about Christian identity is not so hard to understand as it is to put into practice.

Craig C. Hill is Research Professor at Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Oxford University, and was a Henry R. Luce Fellow at Yale and a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University.  Prior to coming to Duke, Hill served for fifteen years as Professor of New Testament Studies at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.
