  Warnings and Tips

This time of year brings a number of extreme weather warnings across our region. Make sure you are prepared to handle any of our summer weather conditions by following the safety tips below.

Excessive Heat Safety Tips
* Air-conditioning is the number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death.

* Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages and increase your fluid intake, regardless of your activity level.

* Get informed. Listen to local news and weather channels or contact your local public health department for safety updates.

Monsoon Safety Tips

* Do not stand near trees or tall poles. Stay in your home or vehicle to avoid being struck by lightning.
* Avoid using telephones or devices directly plugged into the wall. Electricity can travel through the wires.
* If your hair begins to stand, drop to your knees and cover your head. This is a good sign that lightning is about to strike near you.
* Avoid driving during a monsoon, visibility can become very poor very quickly.

Flood Safety Tips

* Avoid areas that can flood easily. Rains can and will come down very heavily causing roads to flood.
* Do not drive past barricades or onto flooded streets, as little as 10 inches of water can float an average sized vehicle.
* Avoid walking through flood waters, if it is moving swiftly, even 6 inches of water can sweep you off of your feet.

Dust Storm Safety Tips

* Dust Storms can come on very quickly and cause very low visibility on roadways. If a Dust Storm is sighted, reduce speed and turn on your driving lights.

* If visibility becomes less than 300 feet, PULL OFF the road way as far to the right as possible and stop your vehicle.

* Do not try to swerve around Tumbleweeds to avoid hitting them! Tumbleweeds are not hazardous to automobiles.

Fun Stuff
  Invented in AZ

Did you know that Arizona is the land of inventions? Each of the following had their start right here in the Grand Canyon State:

Miranda Rights
You have the right to remain silent thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court's 1966 ruling in Miranda vs. Arizona, which established the Miranda warning.

The planet that wasn't
On Feb. 18, 1930, a young astronomer in Flagstaff discovered Pluto, which (for 75 years) was known as the ninth planet in our solar system before it was officially demoted to "dwarf planet."

Chimichangas
Two Arizona restaurant families claim to have invented chimichangas in the 1940's. In case you don't know, a chimichanga is a deep-fried burrito served with guacamole and sour cream.

Jet Skis
Arizonan Clayton Jacobson invented a personal watercraft -- powered by internal pump jets -- in the 1960s. His brainstorm resulted in the sit-down Sea-Doo and the stand-up Jet Ski.

  Cool Stuff We Use

Check out the DefendAir HEPA 500 - its versatile design allows it to be used as both an airscrubber and as a negative air machine in a contain-ment environment. The body contains Microban to inhibit fungal and bacterial contamination.

Up to three of these units can be connected together by the onboard plugs. It uses a three-stage filter system including an optional carbon filter to help reduce odor-causing particles. Also, the HEPA 500 is equipped with sensors that detect when the HEPA filter needs to be changed, and a light alerts the operator to that need. The filters are easy to change, with no special tools required.
