Make plans to attend one of the Beef Cattle Boot Camps to be held Friday, April 4 on the MSU South Farm and April 11 at Brown Loam Experiment Station. The daylong program will cover management areas ranging from forages to fencing. This workshop offers information of interest to both new producers and veterans. Legislative Cookout
Legislators and State Capitol staff enjoyed 300 ribeye steak sandwiches and their choice from two dozen homemade desserts at last week's MCA Legislative Cookout. We thank members of the CattleWomen's Association as well as Hinds and Simpson County Cattlemen's Associations for their help.

Agribition Sale in Verona Saturday
Saturday, March 22, the Mississippi Beef Agribition Sale will offer 24 bulls and 150 females in its annual sale at the Lee County Agri-Center in Verona. 130 bred heifers are consigned with many expected to have calved by sale time. 22 open heifers will also sell. Four fancy show heifer prospects will round out the offering. The sale catalog is available online.

'Til the Cows Come Home
MSU Collegiate CattleWomen will sponsor a 5K Walk/Run on April 5 on the South Farm. The event will feature "Beefy" events and meals. Visit the CattleWomen's Facebook page for details. Participants may pre-registration online by March 26.

Sale Results
The Hinds Community College Bull Test Sale averaged $2,943 on 49 bulls. Elwood Cattle Company's Angus consignment topped the sale at $5,200. The older bulls on the feeding test gained 4.3 pounds per day with the overall test average coming in at just under 4. In the Mississippi Beef Cattle Improvement Association Sale, the top-selling lot at $4,200 was Monogram 281 Net Worth 232, an Angus bull consigned by Gaines Angus Farm. Sale receipts on 30 MBCIA bulls totaled $73,200 for a sale average price of $2,815.

Club Calf Sale
The Mississippi Club Calf Association Sale will be held Saturday, March 30 at the Newton County Show Barn. The sale begins at 2:00 p.m. with 30+ quality steer and commercial heifers consigned. For details, go the the MCCA website.

Cash Cattle:
Fed cattle cash prices ended the week mixed. The five-area fed steer price ended the week at $147.13 and $239.80, respectively for live and dressed, which was down $1.21 and up $1.51. Cattle in the Southern Plains traded at $148 on Thursday. In Nebraska, live sales were at $152 and dressed were at $240 on Friday. In the Western Corn Belt, Friday's live and dressed cattle sold at $150 and $240, rspectvley.
Steers and heifers in Oklahoma City were higher in, yet another, winter weather limited sale. In Mississippi auction markets steers were about $5 higher and heifers were mixed. Cull cows and bulls were $3-$5 higher.

Futures:
Cattle futures ended the week higher this week. Contracts were mostly $2 higher for the nearest April and June contract months, while more deferred 2014 contracts were about $1.50 higher. Feeder futures were also higher. Mixed economic news closed the week out. Retail sales increased 0.3%, which was higher than expected, but the producer price index declined 0.1% versus an expect increase of 0.2%. Corn futures were mixed this week. The nearby May and July contracts were down about one nickel while more deferred contracts gained on the week. The uncertainty between Russia and Ukraine continued this week and will most likely continue to create headaches in the grain markets.
Beef: Boxed beef rallied again this week Choice boxed beef finished with a weekly average of $240.72, up $7.32. Select averaged $236.77, up $5.70.
