Cattle Market Recap:
The fed cattle market was mostly $1.00 lower last week. In the south, sales occurred at $119 while only light trade had been noted as we went to press in the north at $192 to $194 dressed. Boxed beef was even to firmer for the week as last minute holiday shopping helped to bolster prices. Feeder cattle were $2 to $5.00 higher for the week; calves were steady to $3.00 higher. Slaughter cows were primarily steady for the week. Feeder cattle prices were buoyed by lower corn prices and a higher deferred futures market during the week. The higher values are starting to attract increased offerings of stockers coming off grass. As mentioned, corn was lower last week due to near ideal weather conditions in much of the cornbelt as well as last Fridays USDA corn report indicating more acres than previously thought.
