MIMI'S TRAVEL BUZZ

Give Back

I'll admit, when I first heard about the concept of volunteer travel I thought, No thanks. I don't' even like weeding my own yard, why would I want pull some invasive weeds in a taro patch or pick up trash on my vacation? Well, after a long weekend  on Oahu, my heart has defrosted and I've seen the  light, actually, what I saw was the huge splashes  made by migrating humpback whales. Inspired by  our recent article on the best views on OahuI  decided to hike to the Makapuu lighthouse last  weekend. My timing was quite fortunate, since  February happens to be right in the middle of whale  season (January-May). I loved the term, "Whale  Soup," referring to the constant display of whale  parts popping out the bright blue Pacific - breaching, spouting and flipping tail for as far as the eye can see. It's hard to imagine that they are still  endangered, but they are, and I also learned there  are a few volunteer opportunities for tourists such  as the one at NOAAwhich needs volunteers to help monitor  humpback whales from the shores of Oahu. If whales aren't your thing, how about joining some eco-minded surfers, divers and ocean enthusiasts -- the people behind Sustainable Coastlines  Hawaii -- for a fun beach cleanup on various beaches around the island. Another great opportunity is the aforementioned taro patch where you can spend a morning at one of Oahu's most beautiful off-the-beaten-path locations and join a community workday at Kakoo Oiwi

Sail

A quick note for sailing fans who like to plan ahead. As I read in the Honolulu Advertiser, there is a chance the next America's Cup will take place in Hawaii. And the enthusiasm is already stirring, with quotes from Governor Neil Abercombie. "There's tremendous opportunity where the next venue for the America's Cup might be," he says, "I will certainly do my best to see Hawaii is favorably  considered." And Gregory Dunn, staff commodore at  the Waikiki Yacht Club, who adds, "Economically, it will be tremendous." I agree, it could be an exciting  venue, but if you're looking for a sure thing, there is  still room to sign up for the next Pacific Cup, which  is scheduled to sail from San Francisco to Oahu July 6-12. While this will not attract the attention of the world, I'm pretty sure the event and after-party at the picturesque Kaneohe Bay Yacht Club will be just as great.

Take a Tour

Speaking of great events, those heading to Oahu who don't have the opportunity to sail on a private yacht into Kaneohe Bay should consider one of the water tours available via Kualoa Ranch or one of the many Kaneohe Sand Bar tours. Located on the  windward side of the island, the drive to Kaneohe is  less and hour from Waikiki but will feel like a world away once the tour starts.
