Bring out your artistic voice! This course will encourage you to take the next step in your artistic development. Learn to study design in nature and gather visual information. As your expert instructor leads demonstrations, discussions and critiques, you will develop "seed" pieces, samples to take home and use to develop a line of jewelry.
Learn more.
We wanted to learn more about this fascinating class, so we asked Curtis some questions, and wanted to share his answers.
Revere: You will be teaching a class titled "Guided by Nature" during the Masters Symposium. Tell us more about the specific techniques students will learn, and what they will take home at the end of class. Arima: I will be demonstrating a variety of forming, forging, and fabricating techniques including fold-forming, forming spiculums, shell forming, forging, and soldering complex forms. Exploring these techniques will allow the students to create amazing samples inspired by the natural world. Students will learn develop their own investigation of the techniques inspired by their interests. Instruction will include other technical information, such as fabricating pin backs, bails, etc., as time allows. In addition to guiding the students as they create a library of samples to take home, I will instruct students technically and mentor them on an individual basis, helping them to develop their designs and create two to five original works of jewelry.
Revere: Your work is obviously inspired by nature. Are there specific techniques you use to study, analyze, and interpret nature that you will share with your students during class? Arima: Nature is an amazing guide to help us with form, shape, composition, and color. It is filled with metaphors of our human existences and can help us to understand the world we live in. I will talk about some building blocks of nature and how theories of design in the plant world can be implemented into the students work. In nature the more we investigate the more we see, the more we see, the more we become aware there is more to investigate. Because we all see things differently, deeper investigation helps us to create work that is more related to our individual artistic identity.

Engraved and tabbed bezel setting by Curtis Arima
|
Students have been asking how Curtis Arima's upcoming class, Stone Setting: Outside the Box will be different from the other stone setting classes offered at Revere. Curtis visited with the JTI class last week, and explained.
"The settings I will be teaching are completely different from those taught at Revere. First of all, we will be fabricating all of our own settings. Second, the style of settings I will be teaching are non-traditional, and many are well suited to unusual shaped stones. Here is a description of some of the settings I will be teaching:
* Entrapment Settings: I will teach you how to design and fabricate a piece with an opening for the stone, and then how to trap it between two components during the final step, riveting. This allows for designs that allow the piece to be worn in a variety of ways. * Decorative and Carved Bezels: I will give step-by-step instruction on how to add elements to bezels or carve them away so settings seamlessly integrate into your designs. Then, learn to push the limits of what is possible with bezels as I show you how to carve, engrave, and divide bezels into sections, creating tabs to hold stones.
* Decorative Prongs: Learn to forge and fabricate prongs that look like branches, claws, or other decorative elements. * Double Bezels: Learn to fabricate bi-color bezels in two different metals and use tabs to set stones from behind. * Non-Traditional Channel Setting: Learn to cut channels in wires or other decorative elements to hold stones in place.

I will demonstrate several specific projects for students to try so they will have samples to take home. I also encourage students to bring stones they are inspired by to class so we can design and create an alternative setting together. I am really looking forward to teaching this class, hope you will join me for a great weekend!" - Curtis Arima

Revere Academy Update: Crossing Market - Part 2
|
After months of searching for a new location, the Humboldt Bank Building seemed like a perfect match. Now all we had to do was move all of our things in. Because the new space was not ready when we had to exit the Phelan Building, everything went into storage. We put 134 large red bins and a dozen huge speed packs into a Martinez storage warehouse for the intervening month.
During the period when we were closed down and packed into boxes, I had the chance to find out more about the architectural gem we were moving into. In fact, the Humboldt Bank Building is considered to be the gem of Market Street. Its image appears on countless postcards and posters, bringing attention to the marvelous "Copper-top cupcake dome" on top.
| Alan's auto mechanic, Paul Cowden, with a poster of the Humboldt Bank Building

Here is an image of my auto mechanic, Paul Cowden, holding up a poster from his shop wall. It features my favorite open air trolley car from Liverpool, in front of the towering HBB with its copper-top. | Alan's physical therapist, Ashleyrose Costello with photo of the Humboldt Bank Building in her office |
And after Paul fixed up my car, I went to see my Physical Therapist, Ashelyrose Costello, and took this photo at her office, with another poster with of my favorite building in the center. | The first load being moved into the Humboldt Bank Building
|
Although many pedestrians fail to look up, those who do will enjoy the architectural features of this charming 1908 Beaux Art structure. I was very excited at the prospect of holding classes on the traditional art of making jewelry in this fabulous building. And finally after weeks of construction in the space, the work was completed and the movers began wheeling all of our things in. Each load had to be carefully rolled down the street, into the small elevators and lifted up nine stories. Here is the first load entering the building. | Glenda directs movers
|
As each bin came up, Glenda directed it to its most likely destination.
| Classroom full of boxes to be unpacked |
The place was packed to the gills. There were piles of piles and we had no idea if it would all fit.
| Construction begins on benches and cabinets to complete the build out
|
And then our contractors, Mike Smith and Damian Ochsner began to build in our benches, cabinets, tools, equipment, rolling mill, offices, television monitors, hoods, fans, desks, storage area and the list goes on and on. |
We are all so excited to have found a new home!
|
Here and there, as we began to settle in, there were spontaneous eruptions of elation and joy. Despite all the odds, the ordeal of hunting, the cost and disruption of moving, the chore of planning and actual relocating, everything seemed to be working out well. And the best part, the new space is really beautiful! Here are Glenda and Christine, caught in a moment of realization that our new home was just right. |

|
The place slowly came together. While there are still a lot of details and adjustments to the new space, it feels just right. And in early April we were ready to open our doors. A pilot class of Fabrication, taught by Karen Sprague, went well. The elevators to the ninth floor open to our suite. The space is airy, light and nurturing. It will be a great place to keep tradition alive and teach the 7,000 year old art of making jewelry by hand. To be continued... |

Suzanne will be answering all of these questions and more while teaching students how to make a brooch of their own design during her class, Steel & Gold, June 29-30, 2013. Learn more. Register now!
