Market Updates
Happy Halloween!  Thanks to everyone who came out in costume for our celebration!  It was another great Hollyween.

And now, we move into November.  First, don't forget the market opens an hour later in November.  From November through April, the market runs from 9am-1pm.

Second, don't miss out on all the new products coming to the market this month!  Starting this week, you will find interesting handmade crafts from The Boxer, confections from Rain/Shine/Sweet and heirloom potatoes from our new farm, High Standard/The Potato Guy.  Captured By Porches, Hot Mama Salsa, House Spirits, La Fountain Herbal and Salt, Fire and Time are all back this week.  Mickelberry Gardens will be absent this week, but their honey tonic will be available throughout the fall.  Unger Farms might be in the market for one more week (depending on today's harvest).  And Gales Meadow Farm will roasting hot peppers, sweet peppers and even a batch of tomatillos in the market this week.  Warm up by the roaster. Smell the amazing aroma.  And pick up a bag of roasted treats.
Attention bakers! HFM's 6th Annual Pumpkin Pie Contest is this Saturday! If you're entering, please bring your pie to the information booth (at 44th and Hancock) by 10am. You can find the contest rules here. Winners will be announced at noon. Happy baking!

See you at the market!
Pumpkin Pie Contest - this Saturday, November 2nd!
It's that season again, when damp guests are greeted with the warm smells of toasted nutmeg, allspice and baked pastry dough. Pumpkin pie has a cozy-factor that is nearly unbeatable, which is why the 6th Annual Pumpkin Pie Contest is gracing the Hollywood Farmers Market this Saturday, November 2nd!

But the pie contest needs you to make it happen. Whether you have the recipe that won your Aunt Ethel the blue ribbon in the state fair, or you've never baked a pie before, your pie will be welcomed and adored at the Pumpkin Pie Contest. Points will be awarded for deliciousness, creativity and visual appeal. Happy baking!

Contest Rules
· Pies entered for judging must be made with fresh pumpkin (or other squash) purchased at the Hollywood Farmers Market. Please list the farm's name and type of squash used.
· Pie crust and filling must be prepared and baked by the person submitting the pie for judging.
· Entries must include entry form and original recipe listing all ingredients and method in order to be considered for judging.

· Entries will be accepted from 9am until 10am. Judging will begin promptly at 10:30am, with winners announced at 12:00 noon.

Wild Chanterelles

Nature's Wild Harvest

If you have not yet explored the bounty of wild foraged mushrooms that Oregon has to offer, it's not too late - particularly the vibrant and floral chanterelles. With colder weather coming we will begin to see less of these as foragers have to travel farther south to find them. Stop by Nature's Wild Harvest and pick up fresh and dried mushrooms of all types. If you are not sure how to use them just ask. The father and son who run this business are friendly, knowledgeable and a pleasure to chat with.

Golden Asian Pears
Kiyokawa Family Orchards

With pear season in full swing it can be hard to choose a favorite. Stop by Kiyokawa Orchards' booth this weekend and try their Golden Asian pear variety. Shaped more like a small apple they maintain a rich crunch even when ripe. Great in a salad, grilled, or served with ripe brie cheese and warm crusty bread.

Herbal Soaps
La Fountain Herbal

Yet another wonderful craft vendor has joined us at the Hollywood Farmers Market, featuring soaps and candles made using no synthetic fragrances and locally sourced essential oils. This makes for a product that stands out among so many store bought products that use harsh ingredients and chemicals. Try the Sacred Sage made with organic sage!

Crab Cakes

Linda Brand Crab

It's a great time to stop by Linda Brand Crab, and not just for your crab needs. They offer affordable Willapa Bay oysters and clams, numerous species of fresh fish and several prepared smoked items. But the real crown jewel to look out for are their crab cakes. Just looking at them you can tell they are what a crab cake is supposed to be, crab without a ton of breading. The supply is limited so get there early and pick up a few for nice Saturday dinner.

Braising Mix

Persephone Farm

Persephone Farm's booth is exploding with a beautiful variety of produce right now. Something special to look out for this weekend that might not be around too much longer is the braising greens mix, a healthy assortment of baby chard, kale, chicory and mustard. While this can be eaten raw as a salad, try sauteing it with garlic, pepper flakes, a little bit of balsamic vinegar and finish it with a little grated Parmesan. These make for a super healthy seasonal side dish.
