| This week's market bounty is about as beautiful as all this sunshine. For one more week, you can find bright bouquets of fresh cut flowers, late season strawberries and even peaches (best for baking this time of year). Bright red peppers (spicy and not) are still available, along with winter squashes, apples and of course, carving pumpkins.
This is the last week of the season for many of our regular vendors. 2 Fruits, Big B Farm, Herr Family Farm, Laurel Ridge Winery, Maryhill Orchards, Sage & Sea, Thompson Farms and Unger Farms all end their seasons this week. Rock, Cane, Fat & Grain has to miss the market this week and therefore ended their season last week. Captured By Porches, Fatdog Mustard, Hot Mama Salsa, House Spirits, La Fountain Herbal, Mickelberry Gardens and Salt, Fire & Time are in the market this week. You will be able to find most of these vendors at the market periodically throughout November. This November will also bring fresh cranberries to the market from Eagle Organic Cranberries, confections from Rain/Shine/Sweet and hand painted, wooden crafts from The Boxer. Dragonfly Forge, knife sharpening, will return on November 9th and will be at each market for the rest of 2013. And both Deck Family Farm and Pine Mountain Ranch will have naturally raised turkeys available for Thanksgiving that you can pre-order right at the market. And don't forget the market opens an hour later in November. From November through April, the market runs from 9am-1pm.
We heard that some of you weren't able to view the Winter Green Farm video vendor profile last week on Youtube. Here's an alternative link to use; check it out!
Attention bakers! HFM's 6th Annual Pumpkin Pie Contest is coming up, a week from Saturday. The contest will be held on Saturday, November 2nd, meaning that this Saturday is the day to pick up the pumpkin or squash for your soon-to-be-award-winning pie! And finally, don't forget about our Hollyween celebration this Saturday. We invite you, your family and your pets to come to the market in costume. At 11am, we our costume parade begins! Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed dogs.

Alfred Novacek's Sauerkraut Recipe
|
Mix together 5 lbs shredded cabbage and 3 Tbs pickling salt. Put mixture into a stone jar and tamp until juiced. Cover with cabbage leaves. Put a plate and a weight on top to submerge leaves in juice. Store at 60-70 degrees for three weeks. Periodically check top for film/scum and remove if found.
A fermented vegetable product, Alfred's sauerkraut is healthy and delicious. And it's a super simple recipe with only two ingredients!
Pick up some cabbage at the market this Saturday and try it yourself. If you start the process now, you'll have sauerkraut before Thanksgiving! You can also try a blend of cabbage and shredded root veggies, or use red cabbage for a deep and beautiful sauerkraut.

Punctured by Corpses Porter
Captured by Porches
Ready to try one spectacularly balanced seasonal brew? Look no further than Captured by Porches new release. Cleverly named Punctured by Porches, undead porter. This is a wonderfully medium bodied porter with a brilliant balance of sweet malt. Robust without being overwhelming, try one by the fire this weekend!
Rhubarb Happy Harvest Farm
Looking for something interesting and versatile to play around with? Try Happy Harvest Farm's crimson red rhubarb. This hearty stalk is often over looked but has numerous creative options. Try it in a pie alone or mixed with apples. This time of year it makes a great chutney that goes well with roasted lamb or pork dishes.
Onigiri Ippai
Always fresh, always savory! From weekend to weekend you can count on Chef Jane to offer a variation of her Onigiri. Traditionally Japanese rice balls rolled in nori and filled with fun and delicious ingredients. Onigiri makes for a perfect hand held snack while exploring the market. Another recommendation from the Hollywood Farmers Market is to make sure you try Ippai's pickles. They rotate seasonally, are sourced directly from our market and add a great punch to any one of Jane's wonderful dishes.
Lard Salt, Fire & Time
Hollywood Farmers Market welcomes a new vendor to our growing group of producers. Offering "traditional healing foods", Salt Fire & Time showcase a number of craft products made from local ingredients and oftentimes from farms we already have here at the market. Thinking about entering in the pie contest? Try using a jar of pork lard for a savory handmade pie crust.
Cinderella Pumpkins Sweet Leaf Farm
Hopefully you are all going to be entering our November 2nd pumpkin pie contest! If you are looking for the perfect roasting pumpkin stop on by and ask for recommendations. Look out for Cinderellas, they are sweet and meaty and make great pie filling as well as soups.
