| This Saturday in the market, chefs Jesse and Aaron Nichols will be putting on a two-barreled cooking demo. First they'll be roasting sweet peppers from Gales Meadow Farm in the market. Then they'll show us how to whip up a quick late summer barley risotto with whatever's available at the market, for stuffing the roasted peppers. Demo will run from 9:30 to 11:30. Don't miss it!
Also this Saturday is the last week for Kimberly Farm, one of our sources for unique hot pepper varieties. Be sure to stock up! It may also be the last week to find peaches in the market. Last week was the final week for Blooming Goodies and Village Crepery but Hot Mama Salsa and Captured By Porches are in the market this week. Starting next week, you can find new fall vendors in the market, adding interesting new products to the mix each week. Stay tuned to the Local Dirt for more details! Attention bakers! HFM's 6th Annual Pumpkin Pie Contest is coming up in just a few weeks! The contest will be held on Saturday, November 2nd, making this Saturday a perfect time to pick up a pumpkin or squash for practice. Remember: The pie contest needs you to make it happen! Whether you have the recipe that won your Aunt Ethel the blue ribbon in the state fair, or you've never baked a pie before, your pie will be welcomed and adored at the Pumpkin Pie Contest. Points are awarded for deliciousness, creativity and visual appeal. Stop by the Information Booth on the corner of 44th & Hancock for an entry form and a copy of the rules, or check back in next week's The Local Dirt. Happy baking!
Also mark your calendars for Saturday October 26th, for our annual Hollyween Family and Pet Parade! It's a chance to bring your costumed family or four-legged friend and show your stuff. The parade will begin at 11am.

Honeycrisp Apple
Mt Hood Organic Farm
The beloved Honeycrisp apple is here! If you haven't fallen in love with the Honeycrisp's sweet crunch yet, stop by and sample one! Mt Hood Organic Farm is located near the top of the Hood River Valley, with a beautiful and close-up view of Mt Hood! Up there, the warm days and cool nights make for the sweetest of apples. Also look for Swiss Gourmet, Jonagolds and Cascade pears.
Mulled Apple Cider
2 Fruits
While you're picking up apples, this Saturday, stop by 2 Fruits (now located near the SW corner of the market) and try some of their delicious hot spiced apple cider! They make it fresh, using Jonagold apples from Mt Hood Organic Farm and a spice mixture including cloves, allspice and anise. Enjoy!
Wild Chestnuts
Nature's Wild Harvest
Nature's Wild Harvest has now hand-picked wild chestnuts. The vendor, Wild Bill, says this has been a particularly good year for chestnuts harvests. He recommends simmering them in chicken soup, but of course, you can also roast them over an open fire.
Chorizo
Sweet Briar Farms
Sweet Briar Farms has chorizo sausages, which vendor Keith describes as "bratwurst with a bite!" You can grill them up and eat them on a bun or cut them up and mix them with your eggs.
Mizuna
Persephone Farm
The fall is Persephone Farm's time to shine at the market, when their booth explodes with a rich variety of produce! In addition to three different colors of cauliflower (white, purple and yellow) and towering brussels sprout stalks, they currently have mizuna, a little known salad green that loves the Northwest climate right through the winter. It's flavor is peppery, sort of like a milder arugula.
