Market Updates
First off, we want to thank everyone who braved the wind and  rain to shop at the market last Saturday.  We sure have some dedicated
Gales Meadow Farm roasting tomatillos in the market on Saturday.
shoppers here at the Hollywood Farmers Market!  The farmers were all impressed with your commitment to eating farm fresh, local produce and we were too.

They say the weather should be much nicer this Saturday and the sun might even make an appearance at the market!  Rain or shine, come down and you'll find a market full of bright produce and deliciously prepared foods to make it more than worth the visit.  Mt. Hood Organic Farms starts the market this week with organic and bio-dynamically grown apples and pears. Captured By Porches, Dancing Light Ranch, House Spirits and Hot Mama Salsa are all in the market this week.  Scoop Handmade Ice Cream is back for this week and maybe this week only.  And just a reminder, Dragonfly Forge (knife sharpening) will be out of the market until November 9th.

See you at the market!
Salsa Contest: Winning Recipes!

Last Saturday's first annual Salsa Day was a great success! Hundreds of customers stopped by our booth to taste seven salsas, all made by Hollywood Farmers Market vendors, and vote for their favorite. The winner of the People's Choice voting was Montiel's Cocina, for their roasted tomato-tomatillo salsa! We also awarded a Judge's Prize, with judging by Nikki Guerrero of Hot Mama Salsa. The winner of the Judge's Prize was Kimberly Farm, for their tomatillo salsa!

We managed to obtain the secrets of their success, in the form of the below recipes for both salsas. Remember, there's only a few more weeks for salsa ingredients at the market; grab some tomatoes/tomatillos, peppers, and cilantro this week and try out one of these recipes or your own personal favorite!

Fall Peaches

Maryhill Orchards

We really have seen a lot of wonderful fruit come through the Hollywood Farmers Market this season. With this season winding down Maryhill Orchards still has colder weather stone fruit to look forward to - fall peaches! Don't let the large size and solid texture fool you into thinking they are not ripe. This variety is much more dense than the ones we see summer long which makes it great on the grill. Also in salads or a nice open faced tart. Get them while they last!

Fall Strawberries

Unger Farms

In addition to late summer peaches, we still see some big bright strawberries at Unger farms, a variety that grows most of the year and is a bit larger and sturdier than the earlier ones. These are great for making one last batch of jam to keep and use over the winter months.

Seasonal Ravioli

Classic Foods

With such a variety of deliciously crafted pastas it can be hard to choose. If you find yourself in this tough predicament take a chance on one of the many seasonal options available. Classic Foods sources locally so they use seasonal ingredients. This weekend try the porcini or wild mushroom ravioli. Another popular one this time of year is the crab and Parmesan!

Winter Squash

Winter Green Farm

This is how we know its fall! Squash squash squash! Winter Green has several beautiful varieties of squash and pumpkins. Great for roasting whole, making soups and curries or turning into pie fillings. If you are not sure which is best for what just ask. Cinderella pumpkins are generally a great choice for most cooking applications. In addition, look out for the celery root. If you have never used it before give it a chance, it is a diamond in the rough. After peeling off all the exterior treat it like you would potatoes and substitute it for an earthy mash.

Stuffed Brioche

Fleur de Lis Bakery

One of my favorite parts about having several wonderful bakeries at the market is that you are guaranteed to find something a little different every time. This weekend look out for house made stuffed brioche. With fillings like lemon cream, topped with almonds and walnut cinnamon, you are in for a real treat. Good luck being able to leave the market without eating the whole thing.
