Market Updates
The end of August is an interesting time in the market.  The booths are full of ripe tomatoes, summer corn and eggplants.  We see endless varieties of peppers, hot, flavorful and bright.  Pounds of peaches, berries and melons sweeten up the late summer selection.  And at the same time, it feels like the end of summer for many in our market community who are starting up fall adventures.  All this makes it a wonderful time to be in the market.  The produce, the people and the energy are refreshing.  Come join us and see for yourself.

And while you're here, be sure to welcome back THINK Unique
After two weeks away, Suzanne is back with heirloom summer produce and just a few ornamental plants.  Captured By Porches and Hot Mama Salsa are also in the market this week.  Boondockers Farm will be out for little bit longer waiting for those ducklings to get big enough to lay big beautiful eggs.  Happy Campers Gluten Free Baking will also be absent this week, but will be back next week with their delicious breads.  Don't forget that many farmers offer their produce in bulk for all your canning, preserving or pie needs!  Check out our quick and easy recipe for peach pie below and get inspired!

And finally, here's a reminder to finish up those Sprouting Stories books!  You only have to complete 12 activities to get your $5 market token!  You can hand your booklet in anytime at the Information Booth.  And then come celebrate with us at Kid's Day on September 14th.  We have Mo Phillips, Recycleman and a kid's cooking demonstration all on the schedule for the day.  Don't miss it!

See you at the market!
Hollywood Farmers Market looking for Board members!
Applications due Saturday, September 14th

Do you love the Hollywood Farmers Market? Have you recently discovered the excellent weekday Lloyd Farmers Market? Are you looking for a way to get more involved in your community? Well, we have a great opportunity for you!

The Hollywood Farmers Market looking for fellow market lovers to join its Board of Directors in January 2014! Board membership is a terrific opportunity for volunteers, vendors and market lovers to become involved in the nonprofit organization. The Board welcomes applications from individuals enthusiastic about the Market, and especially those with backgrounds in the areas of food policy, nutrition, nonprofit organizations, community outreach, human resources, grant writing, finance, marketing or graphic design.

The Board is comprised of up to fifteen members, including a handful of seats which will be vacated at the end of this year. Board members serve a three year term and oversee the Hollywood and Lloyd Farmers Markets, which are both held year round. The Board's primary responsibility is governance of the Markets, though members may expect to take on a variety of tasks during their tenure, such as mission related developmental considerations and community partnerships. Members attend board meetings held on the third Wednesday evening of every month and also serve on one or more committees.  An annual Board retreat is held every January, and a vendor dinner and harvest festival are hosted by the Board throughout the year.

The deadline for applications is Saturday, September 14th. The Board will invite qualified candidates to an interview at the October 16th board meeting, and elections will take place that evening. New members will be seated effective January 1, 2014

The application is available online at www.hollywoodfarmersmarket.org/wordpress/volunteers/board-application/. Any questions about the recruitment process may be directed to Erin Jaurigue at recruitment@hollywoodfarmersmarket.org.
Peach Pie Recipe

For the ultimate peach pie: Cut peaches into thick slices and place in bowl. Mix together 1/2 cup sugar and 2-3 Tbsp flour. Toss with the peaches until well combined. Add 1/2-3/4 cup heavy cream.

Make (or buy if you must) a double pie crust. Put one crust in a pie pan and fill it with the peach mixture. Roll out the top crust and use a water glass to cut a big circle in the center. Place the crust on top of the pie and crimp the edges together. Bake at 375˚ in the lower third of the oven for the first 15 minutes, then lower temperature to 350˚ for another 45 minutes or so. Try to let it cool before you devour it.
