Market Updates
Last week, we had the pleasure of visiting HFM's flower vendor, Herr Family Farm, at their farm in Corbet.  In addition to seeing beautiful flowers, we learned more about their farm, their family and their connection to the farmers market.  And thanks to HFM volunteer Rollin Bannow, you learn all about them too, by watching this video.

Stop by and let them know what you think of the video.  And while you're here, visit THINK Unique for 20% of all herb plants.  This will be the last week that they have plants for the season and will be absent the following two Saturdays. Be sure to get everything you need this week!  Also in the market this week, you'll find Captured By Porches, Dancing Light Ranch, Hot Mama Salsa and Reverend Nat's Hard Cider.

Dragonfly Forge is also back, so bring your knives!

In case you missed Blake Van Roekel's cooking demo last Saturday, check out the delicious recipe below!

See you at the market!
Eggplant w/ Roasted Tomatoes, Goat Cheese and Pesto
by Blake Van Roekel
Yield 8-10 individual appetizer pieces

1 eggplant, sliced lengthwise "
3 roma tomatoes, quartered
5 oz. goat cheese (fresh mozzarella or ricotta can be used as well)
olive oil

Preheat oven to 325

Place quartered tomatoes on a sheet pan in the oven. Allow tomatoes to roast and dehydrate until they are reduced in size by a half, about 30-45 minutes. Remove from the the oven and cool. This can also be done slowly in a 200 degree oven for a 2-3 hours. The liquid reduces, and flavor concentrates.

Meanwhile, salt the eggplant on both sides and drain on paper towels for 20 minutes. Wipe dry and brush with olive oil. Over medium heat, saute the eggplant until they caramelize, soften and sweeten throughout. Remove and cool.

To assemble, roll a small tablespoon of cheese with a tomato in a strip of eggplant. If needed, fasten with a toothpick. Spoon pesto over the top of each eggplant roll, plate and serve.

SALSA VERDE
1 small clove garlic, peeled
1 cup packed Italian parsley
1-2 cups fresh basil leaves
2 tbsp capers, drained
2 anchovy fillets, soaked in milk and drained
1 hard cooked egg, yolk only
1/2 cup whole almonds, blanch, peel
-3/4 cup olive oil
1-2 tbsp lemon juice salt, pepper

Place garlic in processor and mince with greens, capers, anchovy, hard-cooked egg yolk, and almonds. Process to a paste. Slowly add lemon and olive oil. Season to taste.

New Potatoes
Gales Meadow Farm

Now available at Gales Meadow Farm are a variety of potatoes! Currently you can find: All Blue (a potato that is blue on the outside and inside), Sunset (red on the outside and yellow on the inside) and Fingerling (fancy and nice potatoes in the shape of chunky fingers). They're all equally delicious! While they've already harvested about a ton of potatoes, Russets and other varieties are coming soon and will be available well into December.

Chicken Sausage Sandwich
Buns on the Run
Original HFM vendors from the first season back in 1997! Now featuring a chicken sausage sandwich without pork casing. The sausage--available in rotating flavors lemon herb or pesto--is cut in half, fried flat with green peppers and sauteed onions, and served on pita bread with a dollop of sour cream. You can also buy their fresh, frozen sausages (both pork and chicken) to eat all week!

Gravenstein Apples
Kiyokawa Family Orchards
Now carrying Gravenstein apples, an excellent all-purpose antique apple from the 1600's. Gravensteins have an old fashioned tart/sweet flavor that is hands-down the most popular for making sauces and pies, and has been through the ages. This apple is increasingly hard to come by in grocery stores, but it's available at Kiyokawa, even by the box!

Meadowfoam Honey
Nature's Best - Oregon Honey

Meadowfoam is a plant grown in Junction City. Its oil is used in cosmetics. The plant is a ground cover plant with white flowers. When used for honey, it creates a unique tasting vanilla/marshmallowy flavor.  Give it a try next time you visit Nature's Best and give your tastebuds a delight. You can also try their honeycomb--just scoop it out and eat with a spoon--which will be available for a limited time only.

Real Popcorn
Sun Gold Farm

That's right, the popcorn is on the cob and ready to pop in your microwave! It is fresher and tastes better than microwave popcorn, but is cooked similarly. Each bag includes directions for preparing.
