HFM's Kid's Day is just over a week away! Bring the whole
family on June 29th for a special day just for HFM's sprouts! Enjoy music by Tallulah's Daddy and Steve Cooper & Friends, a kid's activity area, face painting, a planting activity and more. Plus we kick off our new kid's program, Sprouting Stories. Be one of the first 50 kids to sign up and you can get a free copy of Chop Chop, a family cooking magazine. Check out the article below for more information.
But of course, this week you should come to the market to celebrate the start of the summer! Fill your basket with early seasonal favorites like broccoli, blueberries and cherries. And catch the tail end of spring goodies like snap peas and asparagus before it's too late! And don't worry, you still have time to plant your summer vegetables. Several vendors will have vegetable and herb starts this week and Gales Meadow Farm is having a sale on tomato plants. You'll also find Captured By Porches is back this week, along with The Better Bean Company and Fatdog Mustard.

Kids' Day at the Hollywood Farmers Market
by Molly Hendler, HFM Board Member

Saturday June 29th is the heavily anticipated Hollywood Farmers Market Kids' Day, so don't miss out! There will be a plethora of activities to entice the young and old such as face painting, a seed planting activity, live music, an earth worm bin and the introduction of the first ever Sprouting Stories activity book!
Kids can use our interactive Sprouting Stories activity book all summer long to engage with the market in a super fun way. Inside, kids will find a wide array of activities such as word searches and a hunt for all of the different kinds of eggs at the Hollywood Farmers Market. No need to worry if you haven't conquered reading yet, simply have an adult help you out and draw your answers instead of writing them. Kids can submit their completed books to the information booth by September 14th and get a $5 market token! - all while learning about food, farms, and health along the way.
What's even better is that September 14th will be another Kids' Day with a whole new set of activities for the little ones! Stay tuned for more details on this event, but expect to see a cooking demonstration for the little ones.
We hope to see you there for fun for the kiddos and beyond!
Molly Hendler is on the board of directors for the Hollywood Farmers Market.

This time of year, there are plenty of strawberries to be found in the market and many different varieties. Ever wonder what the difference is? Well I asked the many different vendors who have them (see below). The Albion is an ever bearing strawberry that has firmer flesh with more of a traditional strawberry flavor. Hoods are the typical Oregon berry, they are softer and juicier and are great for jam, but they don't last long and are available for only a short time in May and June. Puget Reliance are a big "California style" berry, only sweeter and juicier. They freeze very well, retaining their shape when defrosted. Seascape are another ever bearing variety and are sweet and firm, but not as firm as the Albion. Look for them throughout the season - often all the way into October! Strawberries are available at the market this week from: Happy Harvest Farm, Unger Farms, Liepold Farms, Thompson Farms, Winter Green Farm, and Deep Roots Farm!

Want to fill up your salad bowl with some different lettuce? Come by and see these varieties, red leaf, green leaf, butter, oak leaf and romaine. Be sure to grab some ideas for recipes - especially for some of the more unusual vegetables!
Berries
Happy Harvest Farm
More berries! Look for blueberries (come early!), logan berries and some obsidian blackberries next week.
Fresh Pasta
Classic Foods
Stop by this booth for fresh made pasta! Classic Foods makes pasta from scratch using products purchased from vendors at Hollywood Farmers Market. This is some of the freshest ravioli in town - and made using local produce! In addition to ravioli, they also have flavored pastas including black pepper, herb garlic and spinach. They also have harissa and pesto available for sampling and purchase.
Goat Cheese
Alsea Acres Alpine
Come check out these specialty goat cheeses! They are produced on a small goat dairy, which is located in an isolated valley of Oregon's Coast Range. The mild winters and cool summers are ideal for the production of European style cheeses. The goats are French and American Alpine dairy goats and are small herds. Be sure to stop by and sample the "Party in a Jar" - it will not disappoint!
