Moving Up And Moving Out

After 16 years in Santa Ana, DPOC has outgrown it's office space and is relocating to a new location in Orange.  The new location is larger and more visible which is fitting given Democrats larger and more visible presence in Orange County!  The new office should be up and running by early September and will provide plenty of space for our wonderful volunteers who are helping with phone banking, preparing

Truman Awards Dinner To Feature
Congressman Joaquin Castro

Set aside October 19th to attend DPOC's 19th Annual Harry S. Truman Awards Dinner.
Castro
Congressman Joaquin Castro
The Democratic Party of Orange County is pleased to welcome Texas Congressional Representative Joaquin Castro as the keynote speaker and Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz as another special guest. Congressman Castro debuted on the national scene last year when he and his twin brother, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, were featured as rising stars during the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte. Democratic Congressman Ruiz (Riverside) made national news last November with his surprise upset of six-term Republican incumbent Mary Bono Mack.

Both Congressmen come from areas, like Orange County, that have been bastions for conservatism but are now on the path towards turning blue. The Truman Dinner is the single largest fundraiser hosted by the Democratic Party of Orange County each year. It's a great chance to meet local elected officials, network with other Democratic activists and meet national political figures. Truman dinner awardees will be announced shortly.

Club Spotlight

What are different local Democratic clubs doing to grow their membership, register voters, plan interesting programs and engage their members?

Our "Club Spotlight" feature highlights a best practice or creative idea from one of the Orange County local Democratic clubs. If you have something your club has done which you think other clubs would benefit by hearing about, please notify Monika Broome.

This month we feature the Laguna Woods Democratic Club

Submitted by Linda Dearing, Club President:

The Laguna Woods Democratic Club is one of the oldest, largest and most active Democratic Clubs in all of Orange County. Our club currently has 220 members (more in election years!) with 16 officers and directors and keeps busy and involved in the community. Every month we hold a joint Program/Legislative Action Committees meeting which advises our board Laguna Woods members.

Our Club recently co-sponsored an educational seminar with a new outgrowth of NORML - the Senior Women's Alliance. Club volunteers recently staffed the DPOC booth at the Orange County Fair for three days and food drives for South County Outreach continue monthly with the July 20 drive yielding 854 pounds of food for the needy in Orange County. The Club's Third Annual Picnic is scheduled in August and the Annual Luncheon for September 21. Members come from within and outside of Laguna Woods Village.

At every meeting, we welcome any new members or guests by asking them to introduce themselves and then we give them a small refrigerator magnet which says "Thanks for making a difference!  Also at every meeting we hold a raffle (free to all) with prizes such as recyclable grocery bags, books, campaign buttons, etc.  Invariably one of the new members or guests will win a prize!  Please join us the second Wednesday of the month for one of our meetings. Visit our websiteFacebook page or email us for more information.
