Did You Know?

Gray water is untreated residential wastewater that does not come from a toilet or garbage disposal (i.e., bathroom sink, bathtub, shower, laundry, etc.). Gray water is regulated by the state of California, and a building permit must be obtained before installing a gray water system to collect and send this water to the resident's landscaping, but water quality is not routinely monitored. Recycled water, on the other hand, is water that is purified through several treatment processes to a level that is safe for a variety of beneficial uses.

Message From the Executive Director of SBCCOG

It's Thanksgiving month and time to give thanks for how fortunate we are to live in this beautiful place, the South Bay, with our great scenery, growing economy and rich cultural and recreational opportunities. It is also time to reflect on the importance of protecting and preserving what we have by being good stewards of our environment.  At the SBCCOG and our South Bay Environmental Services Center, we also recognize our volunteers this month in a special reception in their honor for the great work they have done throughout the year to bring our programs to the public.

And, in giving thanks, this famous Ancient Indian Proverb is noteworthy:

Treat the earth well.
It was not given to you by your parents,
it was loaned to you by your children.
We do not inherit the Earth from our Ancestors,
we borrow it from our Children.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Local Sanitation Agency to Gain New Authority for Stormwater and Urban Runoff

Governor Edmund G. ("Jerry") Brown signed into law Senate Bill 485 by Senator Ed Hernandez (D-Azusa). When the bill goes into effect on January 1, 2016, SB 485 will allow the Sanitation Districts to manage and treat stormwater and dry weather urban runoff in Los Angeles County. Currently, the Sanitation Districts are only authorized to provide wastewater and solid waste management services.

Rain Barrel Distribution Events

Are you ready if El Nio brings lots of rain? Catch the rainwater - and savings - with a free rain barrel from West Basin. Collecting and reusing rainwater reduces the amount of water flowing into storm drains, local water ways and helps ensure every drop of water is used efficiently.
