News from the 44th Ward
 Dear Neighbors,

With temperatures rising, the snow is beginning to melt and water is pooling in the streets.   Please do your best to locate sewer drains near your home and shovel the snow, debris and ice off the drains.  Clearing the top of the sewer drain will allow standing water to drain into the sewer system.  If after clearing the sewer drain the water does not recede, please contact Sougata Deb in my office at 773.525.6034 or [email protected].

The Department of Water Management is deploying extra crews to clear catch basins to allow for better drainage. However, due to a high volume of requests,  they may not be able to complete sewer cleaning requests before next week's drop in temperatures.  We will keep your requests on file and submit them again after temperatures rise, since sewer drains cannot be cleaned when temperatures are below the freezing point

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to fix these issues.  Have a great weekend and stay warm and dry!

Sincerely,

Alderman Tom Tunney

Dental Health Month at Agassiz & Blaine Schools

February is National Children's Dental Health Month and to celebrate, I joined  dentists from the Advocate Illinois Masonic Dental Center at both Agassiz and Blaine Schools to raise awareness of the importance of oral health and how to develop good habits at a young age.  It was wonderful to see the students so engaged and asking very intelligent questions.   We learned many interesting facts such as how much sugar is really in some of our favorite foods like soft drinks, candy and juice and why we need to limit these indulgences for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Each student received a free toothbrush, courtesy of my office, and I look forward to hosting more events like these at our schools in the future!
Bullying and Violence Prevention Workshop at Hawthorne Scholastic Academy

I am co-sponsoring a parent workshop with Bulldog Solution Inc. on
bullying and violence prevention. This workshop will be held on Tuesday, February 25 at 6:00 pm at Hawthorne Scholastic Academy (3319 N. Clifton). It will focus on the difference between teasing and bullying, warning signs that your child is being bullied or bullying others, how to monitor social media sites for signs of cyberbullying, and what procdures parents should follow to report bullying.  Bullying has received a lot of attention recently and I hope you will join me for this educational seminar.   Please see the flyer below for more information.

Please Pick Up After Your Dog

My office has received numerous calls about neighbors not picking up after their dogs.  I just wanted to remind our residents that not only it is against the law not pick up your pets waste (please see city ordinance below), but it also is a major source of bacterial contamination in urban watersheds, a hazard to human health and attracts rodents.  Please be a responsible pet owner and a considerate neighbor by picking up after your pet.

7-12-420  Removal of excrement.

This section shall not apply to a blind person while walking his or her guide dog.

Any person found to have been in violation of this section shall be fined not less than $50.00 nor more than $500.00 for each offense.

The 2013 street cleaning schedule has ended for the year.  Streets & Sanitation will continue with street cleaning off schedule until consistent snowfall.  Please pay attention to your vehicle on a regular basis to see the signs.
