News from the 44th Ward
Dear Neighbors,

Yesterday, I attended the open house for Fred & Pamela Buffett Place which is a 51-unit development that delivers brand new, supportive, affordable options to persons in need of housing, health care, employment assistance and a variety of other supportive services.  Buffet Place is located at 3208 N. Sheffield in the former Diplomat Hotel.   The Diplomat Hotel was a problem building in our ward for many years.  While it did serve as a source of affordable housing, the building was a haven of crime and not safe for the building's residents and neighbors.

It was only through the persistence of our community partners and the City's Law Department that we were able to build up a record of violations and fines on the building.  Ultimately, this lead to the owner transferring the building to the City for rehabilitation in lieu of those massive fines.  We worked closely with our community partners - especially the Lakeview Action Coalition, now ONE Northside - to relocate the tenants, craft the RFP for supportive affordable housing and vet the responses.

I want to thank Brinshore Development and Thresholds for working closely with our office and the community as the development took shape.  Securing safe, decent and affordable housing is a critical issue throughout our city and I look forward to having more opportunities like this in the 44th Ward.

Sincerely,

Alderman Tom Tunney

Crime Statistics in the 44th Ward

Since being elected in 2003, public safety has been my top priority.  I fought hard to build the 23rd District Police Station in our ward which was sorely needed and worked to ensure that the police district remained in the 44th Ward after talks of moving it during the 19th and 23rd district consolidation.  I want to share with you the crime statistics that I asked the Chicago Police Department to provide to me covering my tenure as Alderman (2003-2013). These statistics span the entire 44th Ward. Since beat boundaries have changed during this timeframe, especially with the consolidation of the 19th and 23rd Districts, the statistics are not broken down by beat. Winter Reminders

Mother Nature has certainly been unkind to Chicago so far this winter. We have endured frequent snow storms followed by dangerous cold temperatures and wind chills. I wanted to take the opportunity to remind residents of some important winter safety tips.

  • Please continue to check on your neighbors and help shovel sidewalks for those that are unable
  • Shovel your sidewalks following snow fall. Snow/Ice covered sidewalks create challenges for pedestrians and children walking to/from school
  • It is important that in your snow removal efforts, that snow is piled on the parkways and not put into the streets and alleys that have been plowed or shoveled. The trend this winter seems to be snow storm followed by bitterly cold temperatures. Placing the snow back into the streets/alleys creates icing conditions
  • In extreme cold: bundle up & wear layers!
  • Drive cautiously, as the daytime sunshine and night time temperature changes may cause icy streets/alleys.
  • Check any water pipes that are on outside walls and run water at a slow trickle during extremely cold weather.
Sidewalk Caf Permit Renewal for 2014

The Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection will be sending renewal applications to all businesses that held a Sidewalk Caf Permit in 2013. Each year businesses must reapply for their Caf Permit. Please review the renewal packet and submit to our office as quickly as possible. The application process takes 30-60 days. In light of the past warm winters, please anticipate submitting your application for renewal in early January to ensure you are permitted and ready to open mid-March.  Click here to be directed to the application and contact Denise Poelsterl in our office for more information or questions.

The 2013 street cleaning schedule has ended for the year.  Streets & Sanitation will continue with street cleaning off schedule until consistent snowfall.  Please pay attention to your vehicle on a regular basis to see the signs.
