HUG Mural Unveiling in the Barry Underpass

On Tuesday, I joined Chicago Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts and Choose Chicago President and CEO Don Welsh to dedicate the HUG mural in the Barry Underpass.  This mural is a true depiction of collaborative public art. Chicagoans' from all over our City submitted pictures of themselves hugging at their favorite places and landmarks throughout Chicago in celebration of HUG Chicago 2012 -a non-profit created by Choose Chicago and supported by the Cubs to better the community by cleaning, painting and beautifying the city.

This mural is representative of Chicagoans' love for this great City and truly embraces the diversity and unity of the Lakeview community.  It beautifies the entrance to our Lakefront creating a welcoming atmosphere that will be enjoyed daily by residents and visitors to our neighborhood.  I encourage you to stop by and see this mural firsthand.

Ventra

On Monday, the CTA rolled out their new Ventra program that will allow customers to use a single fare card for regional transit throughout the Chicago area. You will be able to pay for CTA and Pace bus and train rides with the following contactless payment methods:

  • Ventra Card, a transit and prepaid debit card that can be used for transit and everyday purchases;
  • Ventra Tickets, for single-ride and 1-Day passes; and
  • Personal, bank-issued credit or debit cards with the "Blink" logo on the back.

Simply "tap" your payment card at 'L' stations or to board any CTA or Pace bus. If you choose to use your debit or credit card, you must register your card on the Ventra website to to be eligible for 25-cent transfers.  Otherwise, you will pay another full fare.

After October 7, magnetic stripe cards will no longer be sold.  Riders must spend the remaining balance on their old fare cards by December 15, which is the date when they will be phased out and CTA riders will have to buy new Ventra cards or convert their credit or debit cards to ones with Blink technology.  Riders can also buy new disposable, paper one-day passes or a $3 single-fare ticket, which carries an additional 50-cent convenience fee and an automatic 25-cent transfer fee.

Reduced-fare customers, including Senior citizens and disabled individuals, as well as eligible low-income individuals who ride buses and trains for free, will receive Ventra reduced-fare or ride-free cards in the mail between late September and mid-November.

Visit ventrachicago.com for more info on Ventra.
