News from the 44th Ward
Dear Neighbors,

Lakeview has been named the third best big-city neighborhood in the country by MONEY Magazine.  While Lakeview will always be number one to me, it is a wonderful recognition and showcases many of the things that make our neighborhood so great.  Whether it be our close proximity to Lake Michigan, our endless entertainment options including first class theaters, concert venues, restaurants and Wrigley Field or the accessiblility to public transportation and many local parks, Lakeview has so much to offer residents and visitors alike.   I am proud to be Alderman of the best ward in the City of Chicago.

Chicago Public Schools resume on Monday, August 26th, which is one week earlier than usual.  Parking restrictions surrounding all schools go into effect on the first day of school.  Vehicles that remain in the "School No Parking Zones)"  are subject to ticket and/or tow.

There will be upcoming Cubs' Night Games on Monday, August 19, Tuesday, August 20, and Wednesday, August 21,  at 7:05 pm.  Please remember that on streets North of Belmont, Zone 383 Residential Permit Parking restrictions will begin at 5:00 pm.

Sincerely,

Alderman Tom Tunney

Safety Update

I am co-sponsoring a free personal safety workshop with Thousand Waves Martial Arts & Self-Defense Center (1220 W. Belmont) on Wednesday, September 11th  from 7:00-8:30 p.m. The Five Fingers of Self-Defense: Think, Yell, Run, Fight, Tell workshop will provide participants with relevant tools for many types of situations from street harassment to physical assaults. Participants will learn to improve their "street smarts," recognize danger sooner, and broaden their options for how to respond. Through interactive role plays, physical exercises and group discussions, participants will practice strategies they can use to confront violence in their all areas of their lives.  I encourage you to attend.  Please register online at www.thousandwaves.org/vpreg.htm or call 773-472-7663.

Commander Voulgaris and I continue to work on strategies to address crime in the 44th Ward.  This week you should notice an increased presence of officers on foot patroling crime hot spots in our neighborhood.  There will also be a Police car dedicated to homeless issues throughout Lakeview.  It will be staffed with Crisis Intervention Officers who will help connect homeless individuals with social services.

Many neighbors have asked for clarification on when to call 911 vs. 311 at recent community meetings.  Any time you require a police officer to report to the scene, you must call 911.  This consists of Police and Fire emergencies, a crime in progress, immediate threat to life/bodily injury or major property damage.  If you need to report a crime that does not require an immediate police response, such as graffiti removal, a sanitation code violation or to file a Police report after a crime has occurred, you should call 311.
