Greetings!
Despite the impending trials of a very classic New England blizzard, we were able to host our annual Brewers Helping Neighbors beer tasting fundraiser earlier this month. I am so very pleased to announce that it was a great success. Our staff's resolve to strive for success in light of adverse conditions exists across all our programs and departments, and I am proud of their work.
As we move forward in 2013, our resolve to strive for success at USES is only increasing, and you can read about the exciting things that will be happening in our programs below. I also invite you to visit one of our buildings and see for yourself the great things the staff of USES are up to!
Best, Kevin L. Hepner President & CEO |

Event Recap: Brewers Helping Neighbors 2013

United South End Settlements' fourth annual BrewersHelping Neighbors craft beer tasting fundraiser was a hit! Another sellout crowd of 300 friends and neighbors sampled a record 35 different selections of beer from the following breweries, whom we can't thank enough for their support and enthusiasm: Baxter Brewing Co., Berkshire Brewing Company, Blue Hills Brewery, Clown Shoes, Cody Brewing Company, Harpoon Brewery, Jack's Abby Brewing, Mayflower Brewing Company, Notch Brewing Company, and Samuel Adams.
WBZ-TV's Joe Joyce hosted the evening between vivacious sets by Henri Smith New Orleans Friends and Flavours, who led guests around the atrium floor in a festive musical procession towards the end of the night. Guests also were able to pair their many beer selections with a great variety of flavors from the following local restaurants: Clerys Boston, Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen, J.J. Foley's Café, and Not Your Average Joe's. Also appreciated was another refreshing addition to the event, HINT flavored water, which guests also enjoyed. Much fun was had by all. We were thrilled to have as a guest Juliana Casale, Boston correspondent for American Craft Beer. She and a photographer attended the event and graciously featured the fundraiser on their website in an article you can read here. If you missed out on all the fun this year, be sure to save the date for: Brewers Helping Neighbors 2014: February 6, 2014

Looking for a fun and empowering experience for your child this summer? Each summer, 180 young men and women ages 6 to 14 years old trade the Boston streets for lakeside cabins in the heart of the White Mountains, located on Squam Lake in New Hampshire.
Established in 1900, Camp Hale operates on the belief that all youth, particularly those from urban environments, will benefit from challenging opportunities for physical, mental, and social growth and development. The goal of Camp Hale is for each camper to leave camp with an enhanced sense of well-being, improved social skills, and awareness of personal potential. Traditionally an all-boys camp, Camp Hale established an all-girls session in 2012 to provide inner-city girls with the chance to experience the beauty and unique opportunities that Camp Hale has to offer.
Residential camping allows the campers to engage in a long list of activities including canoeing, swimming, archery and hiking, fishing, ecology, camping skills, and just enjoying the mountain air. Ultimately, we seek to ensure that these skills stay with them well into the future and benefit them in other endeavors such as school, work, sports, conflict resolution, and interpersonal relationships.

Step on Board 2013: June 11, 2013
Now that Brewers Helping Neighbors is completed, we would again like to announce with much joy that Bill Meserve will have the honor of being presented with the Harriet Tubman Community Achievement Award at this year's Step on Board gala on June 11, 2013.
As many of you know from past galas, Step on Board features a delicious variety of food vendors all from the South End/Lower Roxbury area. The diversity of the restaurants comes together with the on-site presence of USES and its programs' highlights to build a wonderful evening that is a celebration of the South End/Lower Roxbury, USES, and our friends and neighbors. As we gain momentum in preparing for the gala, we will be sending you updates each step of the way.
Please join us in thanking Bill on his achievements and contributions to United South End Settlements, as well as honoring our friends and neighbors who positively impact the South End/Lower Roxbury community on
Tuesday, June 11, 2013.

Spotlight: Boston Volunteers

With more than fifty three hundred volunteers and rapidly growing, Boston Volunteers is a popular local nonprofit with two purposes:
1 - Making it easy for you to volunteer 2 - Building community When Boston Volunteers started on December 26, 2008, they bucked all the trends. No mandatory training sessions for new people. No large corporate structures or high costs. Simply a bunch of good-natured and hard working people wanting to make our little corner of the world a better place. Why?
Because they believe in better. While the Boston Volunteers have a well-earned reputation for having hardworking and dependable folks, they're also known to have a pretty good time doing so. Beyond having fun while helping others, they also celebrate a variety of social events in your neighborhood where they simply spend a little time relaxing and getting to know each other. You can be sure to meet new and interesting people who share your values, and they often gather after their volunteer events, giving you the opportunity to discover lots of popular local restaurants and build our connections with each other! The Boston Volunteers have volunteered on many occasions in USES' Adult Basic Education program, where a great number of volunteers have given their time and energy to help tutor adult students. These students benefit undoubtedly from this interaction and are better able to go on to achieve their GED; the work the Boston Volunteers have done and continue to do at USES helps these students gain skills they will take with them in post secondary education, employment, and beyond.
