Event Spotlight: Race and Gender in the 2012 Election

On Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at 8:00 pm at the Harriet Tubman House, USES will be co-sponsoring a panel discussion with Brandeis University.

This event will focus on how issues of race and gender have intersected during the course of the 2012 election season. While race and gender have been important themes throughout the election, they are frequently treated as secondary issues and seen as unrelated to each other. This forum will go beyond the talking points to explore how race and gender have shaped the campaign strategies of the presidential candidates and informed their public policies. The event will be composed of three panelists, each with unique expertise on this topic, and a moderator.

The panel discussion is free and open to the public.

Panelists:

  • Callie Crossley, Host, "Boston Public Radio" WGBH-FM
  • Lani Guinier, Bennett Boskey Professor of Law, Harvard Law School
  • Kenneth W. Mack, Professor of Law, Harvard Law School

Moderator:

  • Anita Hill, Professor of Social Policy, Law and Women's Studies, Brandeis University

Contact:

  • Chad Williams, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of African and Afro-American Studies
  • Work phone:  781-736-3250
  • E-mail:  chadw@brandeis.edu

Brewers Helping Neighbors 2013

We at United South End Settlements are gearing up for our annual beer tasting fundraising event, Brewers Helping Neighbors, scheduled this year for February 7, 2013, from 6:30 - 9:30 pm at the Harriet Tubman House. The event is a New England craft beer tasting and gathering, meant to support the work of United South End Settlements. Last year was a great success, and we expect another sell-out crowd of 300 young professionals and upwardly mobile adults from the Greater Boston area.

Already we have much to report! We are excited to announce the NINE breweries we will be featuring at this year's event as follows:

  • Baxter Brewing Co.
  • Berkshire Brewing Company
  • Blue Hills Brewery
  • Clown Shoes
  • Cody Brewing Company
  • Harpoon Brewery
  • Mayflower Brewing Company
  • Notch Brewing Company
  • Samuel Adams

For food, we already have Darryl's Corner Bar & Kitchen and Not Your Average Joes lined up. In addition to food and drink, we have a myriad of special guests: our host, WBZ-TV Meteorologist Joe Joyce, our live band, Henri Smith New Orleans Friends and Flavours, and John Holl and April Darcy - authors of the brewery review, Massachusetts Breweries.

As we get closer to the event date, we will be sending updates and reminders. Be on the lookout!

Save the date: Tuesday, February 7, 2013, from 6:30 - 9:30 pm at the Harriet Tubman House.
