DECEMBER 2012
USES Header
Seasons Greetings!

As 2012 draws to a close and we set our sights on 2013 and beyond, I would like to take a moment to thank those who have made a choice to get involved and do good for others.  Staff, family members, and volunteers all have a profound impact on the lives of participants in the USES community, and I would like to thank each and every person who has assisted USES in achieving its goal of building a strong community in the South End/Lower Roxbury area.

Your efforts are not unnoticed, and are realized in the successes of the youth who gain necessary skills to thrive and excel in education, in the adults who work so hard to achieve their GED, and in the seniors who have a community center they enjoy each and every day.

Thank you to the organizations who assist USES, we appreciate your generosity no matter how large or small.  Read about some of the organizations who continue to assist USES in its endeavors, and if you can, please join me in thanking those who have helped USES continue to build a strong community.

Sincerely,

Kevin Hepner

HarpoonHelps2012

As the philanthropic arm of the Harpoon Brewery, Harpoon Helps's mission is to support local charities throughout New England by donating items and many hours of volunteering. For many years, Harpoon Helps has sent volunteers (this year's troop pictured above) to decorate the Atrium of the Harriet Tubman House to highlight the festiveness of the holiday season much to the delight of USES staff and participants.  Merrill Maloney and Mike Paone from Harpoon tell us more about Harpoon Helps and what they do.

How did Harpoon Helps get started?  What's the idea/mission behind what you do?

Merrill - "The Harpoon Helps program came to fruition in 2003. [T]he 'Harpoon Helps' name put it all under one roof and it enabled [our brewery] to focus more intently on expanding our role within the community.  Our mission is to support local charities throughout New England with donations of fresh Harpoon beer and volunteer hours, and by raising thousands of dollars through Harpoon events to aid their efforts. Each year, Harpoon donates thousands of dollars in merchandise and many barrels of beer to New England charities, and every month we invite Friends of Harpoon and Harpoon employees to participate in Harpoon Helps missions."

What made you choose USES for Harpoon Helps?

Mike - "USES has a great mission statement on helping people of all ages and all walks of life. An organization that reaches so many people, is certainly worthy of some Holiday Cheer to brighten everybody's spirits."

Merrill - "We have been visiting USES for many years now during our largest volunteer opportunity of the year, Harpoon Helps Spread Holiday Cheer. This year's event was the 9th annual Spread Holiday Cheer, where we decorated 40 homeless shelters and local community non-profits for the holidays, USES being one of them!  We've also donated in-kind product and merchandise for USES to offer at their fundraising events and to auction off and benefit their programming.  Lastly, we've been attending and pouring our beer at USES' Brewers Helping Neighbors event, and are looking forward to the 4th annual in 2013!"

Tell us about your most memorable experience working with Harpoon Helps.

Mike - "My most memorable experience was the Troop Supply Drive we hosted at the brewery. Friends of Harpoon came to the brewery and donated items for our troops overseas. The show of support was overwhelming and exceeded our expectations. I have friends and family that are veterans and currently serving in the armed forces; the show of support was great to see."

Merrill - "As the manager of Harpoon Helps, I have many fond memories of Harpoon Helps activities, from our Harpoon Helps Beer-B-Q which supports the Greater Boston Food Bank, to our Troop Supply Drive where we send care packages to those members of our armed forces who are serving overseas, but one of my favorite memories was my first year participating in Spread Holiday Cheer in 2008. It was amazing to work beside my colleagues and our customers, and feel their support for our brewery and Harpoon Helps. It was wonderful to meet folks that wouldn't normally have festive decorations to enjoy during the holiday season, to facilitate making that happen for them, and to see the impact we made firsthand."

We're excited that Harpoon is once again joining us for our 4th annual Brewers Helping Neighbors beer tasting on February 7th, 2013!  What can guests look forward to from Harpoon this year?

Merrill - "We're excited too! In 2013 we'll be celebrating the 20th birthday of our Harpoon IPA. At Brewers Helping Neighbors, we'll be pouring this, as well as a few other hop-y surprises to celebrate all things IPA! If you haven't come to this event before, don't miss it in 2013. It is a great way to try the latest offerings from your local breweries while supporting a great organization - something Harpoon Helps is all about!"

As a reminder, you and your friends can enjoy the taste of Harpoon's brews at Brewers Helping Neighbors and other local breweries by getting your tickets online at www.uses.org/bhn.  Order them while you can!

Spotlight: Not Your Average Joe's - "Our Idea"

Not Your Average Joe's has generously donated their delicious food in the past to USES and we are happy to be partnering with them again at this year's Brewers Helping Neighbors on Feb. 7, 2013. Here's a little info on this above-average restaurant and how they came to be:

Not Your Average Joe's first opened in 1994 and, tired of driving too far and paying too much, owner Steve Silverstein decided to build the restaurant he was longing for. The name Not Your Average Joe's came out of his determination to avoid the "average" restaurant rut. He wanted to create a unique neighborhood place, where people know your name, where the food and prices are great, where you feel special without dressing up.

It seems other people want that too. Today, with 15 locations in the Boston area and a couple more near Washington DC, Not Your Average Joe's is satisfying a seemingly limitless hunger for creative casual cuisine.

Be sure to sample some of their food at BHN 2013! Buy your tickets now at www.uess.org/bhn and find the Not Your Average Joe's nearest to you: www.notyouraveragejoes.com.

The mission of the United South End Settlements is to build a strong community by improving the education, health, safety, and economic security of low-income individuals and families in Boston's historic South End/Lower Roxbury and to serve as a national model of successful neighborhood engagement.
