Imagination Conversations at the Children's Art Centre
 | | Painting as storytelling in the Early Childhood Art Studio |
In a recent meeting, Children's Art Centre staff discussed an article entitled "Imagination Conversations", a project by the Lincoln Center Institute (LCI) that investigates examples of Imagination, Creativity and Innovation in today's workforce. Reaching out to major sectors such as government, business, education and science, the Lincoln Center Institute received answers on how these interrelated capacities of Imagination, Creativity and Innovation functioned, were nurtured and then sustained in these different realms.
"Imagination, LCI believes, is the capacity to conceive of what is not, to perceive new possibilities. Creativity involves translating what has been imagined into action - introducing something original into the world. When such a creative act pushes past boundaries to truly new territory, innovation occurs."
What impact do these skills make in today's workforce? And how can we support their development in the youth we serve? Children's Art Centre Coordinator Helen Schroeder gives an example:
"I see all three skills most fluidly at work when creating new curriculum - especially the Uncover and Discover class. Looking at ways to make connections across learning areas, and looking at the connections between art and STEM while being aware of developmental levels definitely requires imagination. Translating those loose ideas and goals into tangible projects with clear learning objectives - making a real 'product' and structure for each class - requires creativity. I hope that my work on curriculum can enter into the realm of innovation."
Arts-in-Education Specialist Catherine Aiello reflects on a more lighthearted incident where she used Innovation to ensure the safety of one of our participants. On a field trip with 12 youth, after riding the Green Line hauling bagged lunches and a first aid kit, one of our student's flip-flops broke - a serious situation when walking through the city streets and cross walks of Boston. Sure enough, after rummaging through the first aid bag, Catherine discovered a pipe cleaner (what first aid kit doesn't have one!) and quickly fixed the flip-flop in a blink of an eye, derailing a stressful situation!

Exploring, Wondering, Creating:
CAC's Arts In Early Learning
Classes use the Arts to Promote School Readiness Skills and Family Engagement in the Community
Each Monday morning, children and their parents or caregivers have been hard at work in the community room of Interfaith Homes making predictions, conducting experiments, and using art to learn about science and math concepts during UNCOVER AND DISCOVER: S.T.E.M. EXPLORATION THROUGH THE ARTS, an 8 week arts workshop offered free of cost to Interfaith residents and community members thanks to a partnership with Thrive in 5. A popular component of this class has been the art engagement backpacks for each child, which are filled with new projects ideas and materials for continuing the learning at home. Children (and their parents) cannot wait to fill their backpacks each week and have reported eagerly on projects done at home. Thanks to Thrive in 5 and Interfaith Homes for making this programming possible!
