2nd Annual Innovation Summit

Friday, April 5  

 

The Innovation Summit is designed to inspire entrepreneurs and features the Perfect Pitch competition for high school students and the general public. The pitch gives participants the opportunity to share their innovative ideas to a group of investors, bankers and venture capitalists.

Location: Kansas City Kansas Community College, Upper Jewell, 7250 State Ave., Kansas City, KS

2013 Women's Employment Network Annual Luncheon

 

One of the fifth largest awards luncheons in the metro, the WEN Luncheon brings together supporters, volunteers and professionals to celebrate the brave women who have worked to overcome obstacles and barriers on their journey to a brighter future.

 

When:  Wednesday, April 10, 11:45am - 1:00pm

Where:  Sheraton Crown Center, 2345 McGee, Kansas City, MO

 

Cost:  $75 for individual tickets, $750 for tables of 10.  Click to register.

SBA, AARP, SCORE to help entrepreneurs age 50 and up

 

To celebrate Encore Entrepreneur Mentor Month, the U.S. Small Business Administration and AARP will host a series of free events in April to help entrepreneurs age 50 and older connect with mentors and other resources.

 

"Simple Steps to Starting a Business" will run from 9 a.m. to noon April 16 at the SBA's Kansas City district office, 1000 Walnut St., Ste. 500, Kansas City, Mo.

 

Participants also can sign up for one-on-one mentoring sessions with a SCORE counselor on April 18. Counselors will see entrepreneurs on an appointment basis only.

 

Finally, organizers will present a workshop on marketing strategies for encore entrepreneurs. It will run from 9 a.m. to noon on April 30.

Understanding Financial Statements

 

Learn how you can grow your business by understanding your financial statements. Presenter Scott Hipp, President of C-JAXN Tax and Accounting Services, will work with you to learn about financial documents critical to business success, and tax issues that may impact your bottom line.

OneKC for Women launches new online portal

 

The OneKC for Women alliance recently launched a new online website portal to better reach and meet the needs of women throughout the Kansas City metro area. The alliance is comprised of the Women's Employment Network, Women's Business Center and Women's Capital Connection. Throughout these organizations, women can find employment training, start and grow a business, or help fund a woman-led business. To help launch the new portal, the OneKC for Women alliance partnered with full-service agency  Howerton + White to create a more user-centric, vibrant online experience.

Women's History Month Review

 

March was Women's History Month and the Women's Business Center was busy! We started our spring FastTrac New Venture class for women, hosted a partnership meeting with the Women Impacting Public Policy, provided multiple training classes and officially launched our partnership with the Women's President Organization. At the WBC, we celebrate women's past, present and future every day so don't fret if you missed something. Here are some articles worthy of a read:

April is Money Smart Month

 

For the sixth year a number of organizations in the Kansas City region have partnered together to support Money Smart Month. Money Smart of Greater Kansas City is a community outreach intiative designed to promote and encourage financial awareness through classes, workshops and more. If you're looking for financial training to help you strengthen your personal and business success, visit the  Money Smart calendar.

 

The Women's Business Center and the OneKC for Women alliance support financial education for women business owners by offering training classes and access to capital for businesses of all sizes. We partner with Justine PETERSEN to implement the  Kansas City Regional Microloan Fund. We offer assistance with  credit building, a critical first step for any business owner to understand. Visit the WBC calendar for training classes on understanding financial statements and informational sessions on the Microloan Fund.
Enterprise Center of Johnson County CEO, Dr. Joel Wiggins, accepts the position of President at Crown College in Minnesota
The Enterprise Center of Johnson County has thrived under the leadership of CEO, Dr. Joel Wiggins who moved to Lenexa from Austin, TX, eight years ago. "I came here with no family and no friends. I am leaving with hundreds of friends and colleagues. This has been a great time in our lives."

Joel Wiggins, who has been the CEO of the Enterprise Center of Johnson County since 2005, has accepted the position of president at his alma mater,  Crown College in St Bonifacius, Minn. In an interview, Wiggins said he wanted to give as much notice as possible for the Lenexa incubator to seek a replacement for his position, which he described as "critical" to the business ecosystem in Kansas City. The new job starts in July.  Read more
