For the past dozen years or so, fueled by millions of dollars in research, the field of Applied Positive Psychology (aka, the "Science of Happiness") has been busy discovering and helping us understand where and how we have the power to override the negative input from this "always on" modern world in which we live.
Today we know more about the functioning human brain than ever before in history; in fact, science has discovered that we actually have a "Happiness Set Point". And, guess what? It's genetic.
It's true... you have an encoded "upper limit" that keeps your happiness level steady. (And sometimes stuck.)
Imagine a thermostat that's set to go back to the same temperature at a specific time each day. Your happiness set point works in a similar way.
A month or two after you get something you wanted (that you thought would make you happy) your genetically determined "set point" kicks in. The elevated feeling you originally felt begins to dim and your encoded "programming" yanks you right back to the same happiness level you started with originally.
That's why the new house, the new car, the new job and even the raise you dreamed about quietly settle in to the life you already had and leave you just about as happy as you were before you acquired the "stuff" you wanted.
The "Adaptation Response" will keep you at the same level of
happiness, give or take, that you have always experienced...
Unless you do something to outsmart it!
Eight years ago, I became a Happiness Coach* and, to this day, I read, do or teach something daily to help me reset my genetic "thermostat" and experience more happiness and joy in my own life than I ever thought possible.
The good news - it's working. The great news - it's learnable.
Through my own journey, I know that happiness is a process not a place. It's a skill that can be learned and improved with practice. If you weren't born genetically happy, and I wasn't, happiness is a choice you can make over and over until it becomes a habit. It's a muscle that you build through the deliberate and eventually joyful practice of positivity.
