The print-format scholarly book, a bulwark of academia's publish-or-perish culture, is an endangered species. The market that has sustained it over the years is collapsing.
Sales of scholarly books in print format have hit record lows. Per-copy prices are at record highs. In purely economic terms, the current situation is unsustainable. So, what does the future look like? Will academia's traditional devotion to print and legendary resistance to change kill off long-form scholarship? Or will academia allow itself to move from print-format scholarly books to an open-access digital model that could save, and very likely rejuvenate, long-form scholarship?

Academic CVs: 10 irritating mistakes
Applications to academic jobs are notoriously convoluted, particularly to posts which combine teaching and research. Typically the CV will be one document among a groaning dossier that might well comprise a cover letter, a research statement, a teaching statement, sample courses or syllabi, and even (on occasion) a diversity statement. Where do you start? And with so many elements to worry about, how important is the CV?

Job Applicant Pitfalls
Unless you are a zoologist or a posterior anatomist, the word "asses" is not a word that you would generally want to use in your CV, r�sum� or cover letter. I am a zoologist, but I still haven't found a good excuse to use this. I do talk about chickens a lot (an awful lot), but fortunately my research focused on laying hens, and so I never had to talk about the male birds.

iBiology Young Scientist Series
iBiology is now accepting applications from PhD students and postdocs to participate in the 2016 YSS competition. It's a fantastic opportunity for trainees in the biological sciences to develop their communication skills and to showcase their work on a unique, international platform. The deadline to apply is January 11, 2016.
Four winners will attend a multi-day workshop led by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, a leading organization in training scientists to give effective talks. After this training, the selected scientists will record a 30-minute talk in iBiology's green screen studio. The talks will be posted on iBiology.org as part of the Young Scientist Seminars.

The L'Or�al-UNESCO For Women in Science program recognizes and rewards the contributions women make in STEM fields and identifies exceptional women researchers committed to serving as role models for younger generations. More than 2,250 women scientists in over 110 countries have been recognized since the program began in 1998.
In the US, the For Women In Science fellowship program awards five post-doctoral women scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each. Applicants are selected from a variety of fields, including the life and physical/material sciences, technology (including computer science), engineering, and mathematics.
Applications will open on November 30, 2015 and are due by February 5, 2016.

ND Energy offers competitive fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral research associates to conduct energy-related research at Notre Dame. These fellowships support new advancements in energy technologies, while broadening the educational experiences for students and postdocs receiving these awards. If you are interested in energy-related research and would like to apply for a postdoc fellowship, please click on the appropriate link below. For Postdocs, the applications will be accepted year round.

International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited U.S. institutions are supported.
Applicants must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree by September 30, 2015, and must have applied to their proposed institutions of study by the time of the application. Up to five International Master's/First Professional Degree Fellowships are renewable for a second year.
Recipients are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. Recipients return to their home countries to become leaders in business, government, academia, community activism, the arts, and sciences.

The Postdoc Challenge offers postdoctoral research associates at Indiana University, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame valuable proposal writing and reviewing experience in areas related to translational research through the use of one or more of the CTSI-Designated Core Facilities at these universities. This is a competitive opportunity for two 1-year awards of $5000 each per institution in the form of an expense account for use of core facility services. Funding is to be used only for services provided by the core facilities. Indiana CTSI-Designated Core Facilities. If you are interested in participating, you must discuss your proposal with your advisor prior to beginning the application process to ensure your participation will be approved.

The CTSI Postdoc Challenge is seeking postdocs to be reviewers for the grant applications. Interested, you will need to complete a NIH Biosketch and email to Dr. Thomas Sors.
