Deep in the corridors of Stanford University's English department, graduate student Jodie Archer developed a computer model that can predict New York Times bestsellers. Her soon-to-be published research landed her a top job with Apple iBooks and may revolutionise the publishing industry. At the University of Notre Dame, philosopher Don Howard worked with a computer scientist to develop a code of ethics for "human-robot interaction" that could change the way Silicon Valley designs robots.

The painting that I remember most from my first visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art was a life-size image of Joan of Arc painted by Jules Bastien-Lepage. Even an artistically challenged teenager could recognize that the artist was depicting an angelic apparition to Joan of Arc in her garden. Effective communicators engage others the same way that Bastien-Lepage was able to captivate me, through clear and vivid images.

Notre Dame's Tax Assistance Program
In general, anyone earning money in the United States must pay income taxes on the income earned.
Be sure you know what you can do now, before the end of 2015, to:
determine whether a tax treaty applies to your case
- reduce your tax liability
- enhance the amount of possible tax refund you will receive
- learn about income taxes that apply to your situation
- protect your visa by filing a tax return
The program plans a general presentation without an excessive amount of detail.
Before the tax year closes, you should be aware of practical ways to save tax dollars and your time.

2015-2016 Grant Writer's Seminar and Workshop for Humanities and Social Science Postdocs

This day-long seminar will provide you with the necessary tools to improve your grantsmanship and increase your chances of securing external funding for your research. Open to members of the regular faculty and post-docs, this seminar is free of charge. Participants will receive a copy of the day's PowerPoint presentation as well as one free workbook geared specifically to major funding agencies: NIH, NSF, Any Agency, or USDA (a $75 value). These comprehensive workbooks are an invaluable resource when preparing grant submissions. Space is limited, so register now!

International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited U.S. institutions are supported.
Applicants must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree by September 30, 2015, and must have applied to their proposed institutions of study by the time of the application. Up to five International Master's/First Professional Degree Fellowships are renewable for a second year.
Recipients are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. Recipients return to their home countries to become leaders in business, government, academia, community activism, the arts, and sciences.

Tech Congress brings tech talent, ideas and training to Congress and builds a practical and pragmatic understanding of Washington within the tech community. Tech Congress bridges the divide of knowledge and experience between DC and Silicon Valley for better outcomes for both.
The Congressional Innovation Fellowship provides a unique opportunity to change Congress by injecting desperately needed technological expertise into the Legislative Branch.
The fellowship is a nine-month residency on Capitol Hill, running from January to September. Fellows work directly for a Member or a Committee for the duration of their residency and may spend their time on technology-related issues like NSA surveillance reform, patent reform, cybersecurity or network neutrality.

The Postdoc Challenge offers postdoctoral research associates at Indiana University, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame valuable proposal writing and reviewing experience in areas related to translational research through the use of one or more of the CTSI-Designated Core Facilities at these universities. This is a competitive opportunity for two 1-year awards of $5000 each per institution in the form of an expense account for use of core facility services. Funding is to be used only for services provided by the core facilities. Indiana CTSI-Designated Core Facilities. If you are interested in participating, you must discuss your proposal with your advisor prior to beginning the application process to ensure your participation will be approved.
Postdoctoral research associates from Indiana University, Purdue University, and/or the University of Notre Dame are encouraged to submit applications that clearly articulate their translational strategy (ie: from lab bench to bed side) and how this strategy can be advanced through the use of technologies offered by a core facility. Applicants must make contact with and request a Letter of Support from the Core Facility Manager(s) to confirm that the proposed project can be accomplished in their core facility. Awardees will be expected to develop and manage a project budget that aligns with the translational strategy. A six-month and a final progress report will be required over the 1-year project period.
