Postdoc Corner

by Kendall Powell for Science

Now more than ever, experts say, postdoctoral fellows need to cultivate a broad base of beyond-the-bench skills and capitalize on transferring them to the next stage of their career to be as competitive as possible. In today's competitive job market, it is vitally important for postdocs to accumulate skill sets on their CVs right alongside their publications-whether their next career move is research-based or not. Postdocs who repurpose their lab leadership and project management skills into star candidate qualities have an advantage when looking to step into their next position.

4 Ways to Increase Your Personal Brand's Exposure and Find Jobs

Irene McConell for Blogging4Jobs

Today I woke up in a complete stranger's apartment in Paris.

I'm writing to you from her super-comfy couch; she isn't home and I have the keys.

Before you get excited thinking that this is a twisted romance story, let me spill the beans - I'm in this town for a week and I rented the flat on AirBnb from a girl I've never met (and probably never will).

I must say, this pad is a lot more swish than the one I live in in Sydney. A lot of thought, money and love has gone into it.

The shower is one of those deliciously pleasant "rain from the roof" types, dozens of picture frames infuse the space personality and a Bang & Olufsen sound system fills up the pad with velvety bass.

So what does this have to do with employment & careers?

Professional Development
Building Future Faculty Program

The NC State University Building Future Faculty (BFF) Program is a two day all-expenses paid workshop for doctoral students and post-doctoral scholars who are interested in pursuing academic careers, who are committed to promoting diversity in higher education, and who are one to two years away from beginning a job search. During the workshop, which is held each spring at NC State University, the participants attend sessions describing life as a faculty member at a research extensive university, expectations of new faculty, and resources available to faculty for help with research and teaching. Participants attend presentations on research and teaching and faculty development, as well as having discussion sessions with current faculty at all levels from assistant to full professor.
