After he defended his dissertation and moved to a new lab-at Dartmouth College for a postdoc-Ian Street hoped his battles with anxiety and depression were over. He was happy about his successful thesis defense-in botany, at Washington University in St. Louis-and a change of scenery seemed just what he needed.

 

Then, after a breakup with his girlfriend, with the pressures of being a new postdoc taking a toll, he found the sadness, isolation, and worry returning. In St. Louis, Street had an array of resources he could rely on, available to all graduate students, from on-campus counseling to support groups. As a postdoc, however, he was no longer a tuition-paying student, and he found himself cut off from his familiar sources of support.

The Office of Research at the University of Notre Dame is sponsoring a CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRANTS FOR PRE- AND POSTDOCS.  The workshop will be led by Dr. Robert Porter (click here for bio). This will be an all day event and lunch will be provided to attendees.

National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity

 

The University has entered into a relationship with the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) to provide additional professional development training opportunities for faculty and postdoctoral scholars.  Our institutional membership allows all Postdoctral Scholars, Assistant Professors, and Associate Professors to participate in most of the programs without further cost.  Click here for more information. 
 
Calendar of Events

 

Join us for the inaugural Shamrock Series 5k when the Irish head to Indianapolis to take on Purdue! Get your Game Day going with a running start before enjoying the rest of the pregame festivities!

 

Runners will enjoy a scenic run through downtown Indianapolis, entertainment from ND spirit groups, and a finish line celebration at Pan Am Plaza with the Notre Dame cheerleaders where each runner will be presented with a finisher's medal!

 

The race will benefit Graduate Student Fellowships at the University of Notre Dame, which enable graduate students to pursue research and course work in their field of study.

 

The race kicks off at 8:00 AM on Saturday, September 13th in Downtown Indianapolis in front of Bankers Life Fieldhouse (125 S. Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204). Onsite registration opens at 6:30 AM.

The World on Tap

 

International postdocs and grad students are invited to The World on Tap, a monthly social at Rohr's. Free appetizers will be provided. The first 50 international students and scholars will also receive a free drink ticket valued up to $6. Please bring a valid photo ID. You must be over the age of 21 to attend.
