WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?

It's the kind of question we secretly ask ourselves when making a choice to become involved in any new project.

Can I put this on my resume?
Will this turn into a referral/recommendation?
Am I gaining new experiences for my career?
Do I feel good about my choice?
What am I getting out of this?

Sometimes, too, it's the same question we ask when choosing to begin a volunteer opportunity. And it's ok. You should think about the benefits to you - volunteering can offer a number of opportunities that will enhance your skills, bring you into a new community or even open a door to new employment.

"Beauty Bus visits are terrific because they give me joy I otherwise would not get. After I have spent time with Beauty Bus volunteers I feel like they really care about me and after I feel very, very special."

~Brenda L., Client, Multiple Sclerosis

Choosing your personal community impact is a thoughful choice and should revolve around your interests while offering a visible benefit, not only to the life of those you are helping, but to yours as well.

Continue reading about choosing the volunteer opportunity for you, and how that choice can lead to new and exciting opportunities.

CAREGIVER Spotlight
Approximately 83% of caregivers are closely related to the person that is cared for. A family member, neighbor or long time friend generally steps up when a loved one is in need and fills any gaps in care. Sometimes, though, complete strangers find themselves helping each other - and an unexpected bond forms.

Our client, James*, had just this experience with his current caregiver, Shelley*. Without knowing it, two strangers became roommates, and then closely related, through a medical emergency, forming a relationship that has benefited both.

TOO FEW CAREGIVERS

In 2050, there will be three times as many people age 80-plus as there are today.

According to the AARP Blog Baby Boomer generations have been caring for their parents over the last 20 years - the abundance of Baby Boomers makes for a vast pool of potential caregivers. As the Baby Boomer generation ages and becomes reliant on the next generation, an increase in needed care will swell by as much as 79% into 2050 as the Boomers hit 80+ years.

The number of potential caregivers is sighted to decrease as the Baby Boomer generation gets older. Baby Boomers relying on the next generation to care for them may find a lack of help in fulfilling the needed care that they once provided for their parents.

What impact does this have on you? A lack of familial caregivers means higher costs for society - nursing homes, Medicaid costs, hired helpers, etc. And, maybe even the most important aspect of all, you become a caregiver with little to no help caring for your aging parents.

How would you embrace your new role? How would you manage your career and the care of a loved one? How would your quality of life be affected, while working to maintain the quality of life of your parent?
