Autumn

Christine Guyott, FCSI, RD

The school year has started, the leaves are changing and fall is in the air.  This time of year always has me contemplating all types of change.  We as consultants are instrumental in being the agents of change for our customers - whether it is for design or operations.  It often seems easy for us to tell others how to change their operations, their work centers, their livelihood....is it just as "easy" for us to make our own changes?  Personal?  Work related?  In our professional organization?

I am in my first 6 months on the Board of Trustees, and with the busy fall at work we hired a new employee.  How similar we both are, even though he is just out of college and my college years are a blur...mostly because they were so long ago.  Both of us are asking...why?  Why do we do it this way?  What has happened when we try it this way?  Like a long term employee, sometimes we forget the "whys"....and are the "whys" really still important?  Is there a different way to do things that perhaps the new person sees that we didn't?  In some ways it is a challenge to our comfort level of "that's just the way we do it".  But isn't that the answer we get frustrated with when we hear it out of our customers' mouths?

Change is hard.  Change is inevitable.  Change is necessary.  FCSI TAD and WW have both had big changes in the past month.  The Americas Division spread its wings further into South America with a seminar and exhibit in Santiago, Chile.  FCSI WW has a new app - technology will keep us changing whether we like it or not!  We need to change to be a viable professional organization.  We need to continue to embrace change personally and ask the tough "why" questions of our own organizations.  Change is growth.

FCSI Santiago Show a Success

We are happy to report that our Santiago tradeshow and educational session we cited last month were a great success.  The Espacio Food & Service Show had record breaking attendance and our session "Trends & Technologies in the Development of Professional Foodservice Facilities" featuring our member panelists Karen Malody, FCSI, MSW; Ken Schwartz, FCSI; William Caruso, FFCSI (PP), Chris Tripoli, FCSI; and FCSI Worldwide President, Jonathan Doughty, FCSI, BSc and moderator William Taunton, FCSI was greatly received.  Our booth traffic was extremely busy with us running out of magazines and giveaways.

The success of this show is already documented with two new consultant membership applications in Latin America and an agreement with SINDAL in Brazil to expand our reach beginning next year.  SINDAL is the Brazilian syndicate of the foodservice industry and will be our partner for the next 5 years.  Through their connections, FCSI will benefit from complimentary booth space as well as the opportunity for educational sessions at Equiphotel or FISPAL beginning in 2015.

Brazil is the second largest economy in The Americas division and has been quite elusive for us over the years. With the signed agreement between SINDAL and FCSI, we will be able to have a local presence in that market and will give the opportunity to FCSI and its members to grow in that market with free presence in local trade shows and the possibility to develop seminars without the costs usually involved in these types of events.

FCSI Symposium Sponsorship Opportunities

ICON Committee Member
Welcomes New Addition

On August 4th, ICON Committee member Jennifer Murphy and husband Kyle were happy to welcome their daughter, Emma Jean, into the world.  Emma was born at 9:15 in the morning.  She was 20 inches long and weighed in at 7lbs 15 oz.

Emma is the second child in the Murphy household.  Jennifer and Kyle also have a 3-year-old daughter, Lilah, who is thrilled to have a new baby sister.

Jennifer has now returned to her job at Vision Builders and Design in Charlotte, NC after 8 weeks at home.  Both she and baby are handling the transition very well and Jennifer is enjoying "getting back into the swing of things".  As her family continues to grow (these kids never stop eating!), she looks forward to growing as a consultant and celebrating all of the crazy challenges to come!

Congratulations, Jennifer!
