"There are some 3,500 churches in the greater Houston area, including 5 of Outreach Magazine's Largest Churches in America. Think of the possibilities... Ponder the potential to change Houston if all of these churchgoers 'activated' and ramped up their commitment to love their neighbors to a new, even higher level.

"There is much at stake... Thousands of Houston-area residents are poor, hungry, and even trafficked in human slavery. And in the midst of this stands the Church of Jesus Christ... with resources, knowledge, and tools unequaled in the history of Christendom. I believe that we stand on the brink of a defining moment. We have a choice to make...

"Will [historians] write that this, the beginning of the twenty-first century, was the Church's finest hour? Or will they look back and see a Church too comfortable, insulated from the pain of the rest of greater Houston, empty of compassion, and devoid of deeds?... The heart and soul of the Church of Jesus Christ, the very integrity of our faith and our relevance in Houston, hang in the balance... One way or the other, this will be our defining moment...

"The first-century world was amazed by Christ because of what He did: Jesus healed the sick, loved the poor,... stood up for the down-and-out,... dined with prostitutes and corrupt tax collectors,... fought for justice for the oppressed,... [and] demonstrated that greatness is found in serving... These actions - performed by one man - changed the world. These same actions, when carried out by His followers, still change the world today."

We love that churches throughout greater Houston are indeed "ramping up their commitment to love their neighbors." We especially love seeing churches that are loving their neighbors through their local schools. What a valuable way to get to know and affirm the community's needs, strengths, and opportunities while serving alongside those educating our future leaders. In a world where differences divide and despair is rampant, a church-school partnership has the power to offer reconciliation and hope.

It's back-to-school time! Do you know of a church-school partnership in the greater Houston area? Are you or your church members loving a school through mentoring, tutoring, appreciation meals, etc.? We'd love to hear your story!

Celebrate & Accelerate!

We share regularly on social media about the church-school partnerships we're discovering. Check out pictures and stories here. Then join us by posting your own pictures and stories on Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #LovingHoustonSchools!

To clarify, we're not celebrating these stories to uplift individual churches. We're celebrating so that the greater Houston community can see how God is working and then be encouraged & empowered to join in! We can't take credit for what's already happening - we just want to shine a light on the wonderful things God's people are doing.

Matthew 5:16 ...let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Whether your church has 50 or 50,000 members, YOU can make a difference in your community.

"You and I are the pieces in [God's] hand, and He places them in just the spots where our particular shapes, sizes, and patterns best fit with the other pieces... no single piece is insignificant... God has created each of us with a unique contribution to make to our world and our times... He uses what we have to offer.

"[In the feeding of the five thousand], Jesus... asked not how much it would take to solve the problem, but only how much they had to offer... God never asks us to give what we do not have... But he cannot use what we will not give."

How to Help!

Church, what if we followed Jesus' example? How would Houston be different if we loved our neighbors like Jesus did?

What if doctors in our churches healed the sick through health clinics, financial advisors taught money management for the down-and-out, and lawyers offered legal help for the oppressed? What if our scientists, engineers, and journalists invited kids to their workplaces to give tangible hope about what could be? What if our moms and retirees spent time with "at-risk" kids and served faculty and staff at local schools?

Church, let's love like Jesus did - with no hidden agendas or ulterior motives but just out of obedience to the Father. In the words of Pastor Rudy Rasmus, let's Love. Period.

John 13:35 "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."

Why Schools?

"While people may have varying ideas about what justice may look like in light of Ferguson, I think we can all agree that education matters in any and every context... And the fact that certain schools in certain neighborhoods have different and limited resources is an example of injustice.

"One of my congregants is an elementary school principal. At her school, 93% of her students qualify for the free and reduced lunch rate, and she shared the miracle and blessing of several churches collaborating together to bless students and faculty alike with no agenda but to simply ask, 'How can we support you?'

"This is the Gospel in action."
