Introducing #CourageousCommunity
#CourageousCommunity is an effort inspired by The Protectors' visit to Hopkins County Schools in spring 2015. The purpose of this project is "to build a safe and supportive place where everyone is treated with dignity and respect and encouraged to reach their full potential." The hashtag is being used in the name to help build awareness through social media.

A variety of efforts will be included under the name #CourageousCommunity, including anti-bullying measures, suicide prevention and character building. We will also be rolling out ways to get the community involved, because this will truly take a community-wide effort to be successful.

"Guidelines and Resources for Well-Being" has been distributed to the schools. This includes lessons that combine the curriculum provided by The Protectors with the PBIS Anti-Bullying program. Plans also include a "word of the month" that we hope will be posted in area businesses/organizations. We welcome the participation of the community in this effort and will be seeking partners who can help with funding.

We will be unveiling more details soon. A website has been established at www.hopkins.kyschools.us/courageouscommunity.

Best-Selling Author Visits
During a visit to James Madison Middle School Monday, New York Times bestselling author Kody Keplinger gave students insights into the writing process, how she became a writer, and what it was like to have her first novel, "The DUFF," made into a movie.
Keplinger grew up in McLean County and remembers sitting at her mom's typewriter as a child. It had no paper in it, but she made up stories while she was sitting there. Later, she wrote for school portfolios, and at age 11 wrote her first novel. She had her first novel published right after high school graduation.

The major motion picture based on that book, "The DUFF," was released earlier this year. She answered students' questions about meeting the actors and attending the premiere.

She lives in New York City and writes full-time. Keplinger is legally blind, but never let that stop her. Her next goal is writing for film and TV.
