Energy Savings Competition

The school system is beginning an energy savings competition involving all the schools, district energy manager Bruce Sauer has announced.

Each month, electricity usage for each school will be compared to usage from the previous year. The school that reduces its usage by the largest percentage will be declared the winner and receive 50 percent of its savings. In addition to the 1st-place winner, each school that reduced its usage compared to last year's corresponding month will receive $100.

Each school will be competing against its own school's electricity usage for the same period last year. They will be competing against other schools though in order to see which one can save the most, as a percentage, each month. This competition will run from August through May.

"Depending on the percentage saved, the award can range from hundreds of dollars to even a few thousand," said Assistant Superintendent Steve Gilliam. "The money can be used by the schools for any facility needs or wants, as long as it benefits students."

One of the best ways for a school to successfully compete for the award is to establish an Energy Team within the school, Sauer said.

"I can help them with ideas and tips on ways to best save energy," he said. "I will be contacting the school principals with more details about the competition and forming school energy teams."

Private Message to HCS via Facebook:

I would like to compliment Mrs. Winters (and staff) at JMMS for her (their) actions on 10/25 during the mass of rumors about threats to Hopkins co. schools. She allowed me to walk my child to her classes and eat lunch with her to ease both of our minds during the threat. I believed it was blown way out of proportion, and wanted her to attend her classes, but was still very worried. I was welcomed into the school after showing my I.D. and saw that they were doing everything possible to ensure the safety of the children there.

Designated models of Turning Point clickers now work for student polling or self-paced assessments. And, a new tool is available for Curriculum Managers to create, assemble, edit and manage all types of instructional materials directly in CIITS.
