Brookline High School - This Week

2014-2015 STUDENT COURSE SHEETS: The master schedule has been run, and students will receive their course lists this week in advisory. Please look at the courses, and if there is an error or omission of a course previously requested, contact the counselor. Reminder that due to budgeting and staffing, we will be unable to add a student to a class that s/he did not originally request. We will also hold an Arena Scheduling Day for students to address errors on Monday, June 23 from 11:00 to 3:00 pm in the library. Counselors and Department Chairs will be present.
PTO TEACHER GRANTS FOR NEXT YEAR Thanks to the financial support of the BHS community, the PTO will fund $6,500 to Josh Paris, Chair of the Math department, for the BHS STEAM Initiative. This innovative and exciting program will include in-depth, self-directed STEAM related projects for 9th grade students as well as summer NuVu sessions for two students and two teachers. Your contributions will also provide $1,000 for Race Reels, a program created by SWS English teacher, Abbie Erdman. Race Reels provides a common experience and jumping-off point for difficult conversations around race and develops an audience that is comfortable discussing this subject. After viewing each film, students and adults gather in a circle to meet with speakers, directors, or relevant citizens to contemplate the issues raised by the film. The movies are shown in the MLK Room at BHS and pizza is served. These are just two of the 19 grants the PTO will be funding next year, totaling close $24,000 - all thanks to donations made by the committed BHS community. To help continue to support BHS teachers and their ideas, please consider making a donation today.
SPECIAL EVENTS CO-CHAIR NEEDED The PTO is looking for someone to help coordinate PTO sponsored special events. You will organize the Teacher Appreciation Breakfast in the fall and the Luncheon in the spring. You will also help provide and serve drinks and snacks at the National Honors Society Induction Ceremony and the Conversaciones event. These are very rewarding and appreciated events and not a huge time commitment. If you are interested, please contact the PTO at copresidents.bhs.pto@gmail.com. If you would like more information about what this position entails, please contact Suzanne Elovecky, the outgoing co-chair.
TEAM LEADERS NEEDED FOR THE AFTER THE PROM PARTY COMMITTEE The committee has lost a couple key members with the current graduating class. The ATPP needs a creative person to take over the vision and organization of the decorations for the After the Prom Party. The committee is also looking for someone to organize the food for the party. Please contact Suzanne Elovecky if you are interested in either position or would like more information. |

PARENTS' SURVIVAL GUIDE FOR SUMMER As we come to the end of the academic year, the busy, ordered structure of school slides into the "lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer." Teens feel looser and parents often relax the rules as vacation mode kicks in. But with more free time and fewer consequences, summer can also be the riskiest time of the year for teens, from drug/alcohol experimentation to sexual activity. Check out B-PEN's new Parent Update, a special issue on "Safe Summer Fun" which includes activity tips, parenting guidelines, and helpful local resources.
