SAVE THE DATE - On April 8 at 7 p.m. in the BHS Auditorium, B-PEN presents a parent forum -- The Changing Face of Marijuana - Revisiting the Conversation with Adolescents. The changing landscape of marijuana has left many of us unclear on some of the issues. Adolescents, who are getting mixed messages, are especially prone to misperceptions that could lead to increased marijuana use and possible abuse disorders. This open public forum addresses student perceptions and current use, clarifies legal safeguards, and explores marijuana's impact on the developing teen brain, with information on addiction and treatment. For more information, go to eventbrite.
EVEN ONE PRE-PROM TAN CAN BE DANGEROUS With prom season just around the corner, many area teens may be tempted to head to the tanning salon. But experts continue to urge teens (and adults) to think twice about subjecting their bodies to dangerous ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can lead to skin cancer, as well as wrinkles, brown spots, and other signs of premature skin aging. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, "Just one indoor tanning session per year in high school or college boosts the risk of developing potentially deadly melanoma by 20 percent. The "Healthy Habits" tab at www.B-PEN.org offers a range of information on talking to your teens about tanning risks, including cautionary tales from young cancer survivors and tips for safely using sunless UV-free tanners products. Better still is to encourage children to embrace their own natural skin tone -- check out the "Go With Your Own Glow" campaign.
