STUDENTS FOR THE BROOKLINE FOOD PANTRY A new group at BHS, will be raising money for the Brookline Food Pantry, at Back to School Night. The Brookline Food Pantry helps over 500 low income families and individuals in Brookline. The Brookline Food Pantry addresses a community- wide problem by providing food to people in need. At Back to School Night, it has been a BHS tradition to collect food and supplies to help the less fortunate in our community. This year, we will ask that you pledge a small donation to help support the Food Pantry's efforts. We look forward to seeing you there and hope that you will be a part of this exciting new opportunity.

SCHOOL COUNCIL

The Brookline High School Council is looking for new parent members. As mandated by the Massachusetts Department of Education, the School Council, a representative, school building-based committee composed of the principal, parents, faculty, students and a community member, assists the headmaster in preparing a school improvement plan to enact the high school and district strategic plans.

School Council members are chosen by the BHS parent body through an election administered by the PTO on Back-To-School-Night, which is October 17. This year we are looking for 3 new parent representatives. Parents may nominate themselves or another parent, and the three highest vote getters will serve a 2-year term. If we only have 3 volunteers, we will not hold an election. All candidates are asked to submit a brief biographical sketch that will be available prior to the vote.

The first School Council meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 29 at 7:30 am in the Headmaster's office. Meetings will be the third Tuesday of every month through June.

If this is something that interests you, please contact Nancy Parker, PTO co-president.

Thank you,
Deborah Holman

Brookline High School - Upcoming/Ongoing
NEWS FROM BSAPP (Brookline Substance Abuse and Violence Prevention Program) Did you know that Brookline High School has two social workers dedicated to working with teens and their families around alcohol, marijuana and other drugs? Parents can call Mary Minott or Hope Schroy at 617-713-5155 for confidential consultation around any concerns. They are here to be a resource for all Brookline students and parents, so do not hesitate to pick up the phone. As students entering new social situations, they will encounter new challenges. Parents can help by giving a clear "no use" message and practicing strategies with your child on how to say no to alcohol and other drugs if offered. October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, and active parents are key to drug free teens. For more information, check out BSAPP online.
