President's Message

This past summer the Gig Harbor BoatShop developed two new programs, Family Boat Building and the Longboat Program. It took the leadership, initiative and hard work of David Gaffney and Tim Barker to get these complicated activities ready to offer up to the community. Family Boat Building participants build a 12' rowboat in a weekend, and Longboat program participants, 11 at a time, row and sail a 26' longboat for trips lasting at least a few hours.

Volunteer David Gaffney spent hours and hours researching the family boatbuilding process, he built a trial boat, spent more hours pre-milling boat parts, gathered staff and volunteers to help during the scheduled workshops and, no surprise, all the hard work culminated in successful experiences for 6 groups of Family Boat Builders and a solid new boatbuilding activity for the BoatShop to offer to our community.

Staff member Tim Barker ushered a program idea into program reality. The Longboat Program requires licenses, USCG certifications, $5000 worth of equipment, leadership expertise, vessel stability tests, and more. Tim got all that accomplished and lead five Longboat trips including a Harbor WildWatch youth group trip to Sunrise Beach and a corporate teambuilding trip with Real Carriage Door employees.

David and Tim's efforts have added two amazing programs that can serve as foundational BoatShop learning activities for the public. The BoatShop is fortunate and proud to have volunteers and staff with the skills and fortitude to make good things happen.

Ways Project Begins a New Phase
The Eddon Boatyard Restoration Project is Poised to Begin Phase III: Reconstruction of Marine Railway Piling Caps and Rails.

In May of 2012 The City of Gig Harbor and Gig Harbor BoatShop combined forces to submit a Washington State Heritage Capital Projects Fund (HCPF) Grant for continued work on the marine railways. The grant request was accepted and $128,355 was recommended by the grant committee and budgeted by the state this past June.

Gig Harbor City Council voted to add $60,000 for the ways project to the city budget for a total of $188,355. This funding will allow the City of Gig Harbor and Gig Harbor BoatShop to move forward with phase III as soon as construction permits are renewed. Peter Katich, senior city planner has submitted all necessary applications to the agencies involved. We hope that work will commence by the summer of 2014.

This will not complete the project but will give it a big push forward.

Update on Launch #706
We're really making progress!
Installing the deck
Work on Launch #806 is progressing nicely. We installed the plywood deck last week, and even canvassed it the same afternoon. This week we made patterns for the oak cockpit coamings, fitted the gunwale guards, and painted a second coat of enamel on the deck canvas.
Next Saturday we'll invert the launch and sheathe the hull in a combination of dynel and 'glass fabric set in epoxy resin. It will be messy fun - come and join us!
We look forward to a test-float soon to check trim, and establish the location of the four golf cart batteries that will power the 24V 1 HP electric motor.

Youth and Adult Longboat Program
26ft Longboat Porpoise

The Gig Harbor BoatShop is now offering educational and corporate teambuilding experiences aboard the Longboat Porpoise. Porpoise is a replica of the ship's gig from the 19th century Wilkes expedition used to explore Gig Harbor. The Longboat is an ideal vessel for learning about rowing, sailing, and maritime skills like navigation and seamanship. The Longboat program is a perfect on-the-water experience for youth groups and a great activity with friends, family or colleagues. Man an oar aboard a classic and spend a few hours experiencing the waters of Gig Harbor and Colvos Passage. Learn more...
